NHGRI Guidance to Grantees for Select Prior Approval Requests

This general guidance is given with the premise that the grantee has a working knowledge of the NIH Grants Policy Statement, understands whether an action requires NHGRI prior approval, and has consulted with their Program Director and/or Grants Management Specialist on any unusual aspects.

Guidance herein is for the typical prior approval request — additional information may be required based on unique circumstance for the specific action in question.

Below is a select listing of extramural policy notices from The NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts and other important grants administration information sources. The NIH is the principal federal agency responsible for biomedical and behavioral research and research training. As such, it is accountable to Congress and the general public for responsible stewardship of federal research dollars. Sound management of research funds requires oversight by both the recipient institution and the sponsoring agency.

The relationship between NIH and its grantees is predicated on trust. The NIH expects that grantees will properly administer the sponsored activities in accordance with the applicable regulations and policies. See NIH Grants Compliance and Oversight [grants.nih.gov] for additional information.
