On June 29, 2011, the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), sponsored its first Genomic Medicine Colloquium - Genomic Medicine Centers Colloquium I - at the Marriott O'Hare in Chicago, Ill. Geoff Ginsburg, M.D., Ph.D., Duke University, and Teri Manolio, M.D., Ph.D., NHGRI, co-chaired the meeting, which gathered genomics researchers and experts to:
- Identify areas of active translational and implementation research across the various groups and determine potential commonalities and uniqueness
- Define demonstration projects in genomic translation ready for investigation now or in the near future and what is needed to actualize them
- Stimulate development of a consortium for conducting genomic translational research
Discussions during the meeting addressed topics relating to clinical implementation such as:
- Generation of Evidence of Clinical Utility
- Institutional and External Barriers to Implementation
- Useful Models of Research Networks for Implementation
- Identification of Potentially Actionable Variants
- Development of Educational Tools for Healthcare Providers
- Outcomes Measurement
- Research Strategies for NHGRI and NIH to Accelerate Clinical Implementation
