Frederick Ognibene

A graduate of Cornell University Medical College, Dr. Frederick P. Ognibene fulfilled internship and residency requirements in internal medicine at New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center. In 1982, Dr. Ognibene came to the National Institutes of Health as a clinical fellow; later becoming a senior investigator in the Clinical Center's Critical Care Medicine Department.

Dr. Ognibene served as director of the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Training Program and co-chaired the NIH Graduate Medical Education Committee for clinical fellows in accredited training programs until May 2003. He was then appointed director of the newly established Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education. Dr. Ognibene is responsible for all of the clinical research educational programs in the NIH Clinical Center. He leads the NIH Clinical Research Training Program for medical and dental students and is engaged in the development of new educational programs and partnerships with extramural investigators in the NCRR CTSA network and at other institutions.

Dr. Lembo serves as both the Executive Director of Graduate Medical Education and as the Designated Institutional Official to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) for the NIH Clinical Center. In these roles, Dr. Lembo is responsible for administrative oversight of all ACGME accredited training programs at the Clinical Center, and for the maintenance of NIH institutional accreditation as a sponsor of graduate medical education specialty and subspecialty training programs nationally. He also serves as the director of the Clinical Electives Program, which provides senior year medical or dental students with an opportunity to gain firsthand experience working with patients enrolled in clinical or translational research protocols at the Clinical Center. Dr. Lembo is a graduate of Cornell University Medical College and completed his residency and fellowship training in Pediatrics at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He has served as a faculty member at Case-Western Reserve University, Yale University and New York University.

Irwin M. Arias, MD

Dr. Arias joined the Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education (OCRTME) in January 2012 and serves as Director of the Demystifying Medicine Program and its associated course. In its twelfth year, the Demystifying Medicine course is designed to bridge the gap between advances in biology and their application to major human diseases. Approximately 900 Ph.D and M.D. students register for the course annually.

Dr. Arias has an eminent scientific career spanning over six decades. Since 1956 he has studied the mechanisms for entry, transport and secretion by hepatocytes of bile pigments, metabolites, hormones and drugs. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed research papers and completed 66 invited reviews and book chapters. Dr. Arias came to the NIH as a Fogarty Fellow and IPA recipient in 2000. He was later appointed Senior Scientist and Head of the Unit on Cellular Polarity within the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, Cell Biology and Metabolism Program (CBMP), a position he held until joining OCRTME.

LaTanya Bailey coordinates the "Principles of Clinical Pharmacology" course, which is taught at the NIH as well as broadcasted in many locations in the United States and abroad. She also provides additional support to the "Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research" and the Clinical Research Curriculum Certificate program. Ms. Bailey has been working at the NIH since 2006 where she was a Program Support Assistant at the National Cancer Institute. She earned her bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Maryland.

Dr. Bruce Baum is the director of the Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP). Dr. Baum's primary role is to develop the academic curriculum that participating student scholars follow during their one-year tenure on the NIH campus.

Dr. Baum began his career at the NIH in 1976 as a post-doctoral fellow in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and joined the National Institute on Aging as a senior investigator in 1978. He was recruited in 1982 to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research as its clinical director, and then chief of its Gene Therapy and Therapeutics Branch. Dr. Baum also has years of experience with translational research, including a recently completed gene therapy trial to repair radiation-damaged salivary glands.

In addition to his research, Dr. Baum has had a continuous interest in the training of health professionals. A member of the original board of tutors for the NIH Clinical Research Training Program and past chair of the NIH-Duke Masters in Clinical Research Program admissions committee, he also has made a considerable effort to increase the relevancy of biological science in dental education.

Benita Bazemore

Benita W. Bazemore has been with the Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education since its inception in 2003. She currently coordinates the "Introduction to the Principles and Practice of Clinical Research" course, which is broadcast across the United States and internationally. She also coordinates the online "Clinical Research Training" course and the NIH-Duke Training Program. Ms. Bazemore has a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Winston-Salem State University.

Rhea Frazier

Ms. Rhea Frazier provides essential administrative and program support services to allow the OCRTME to fulfill its mission within the NIH Clinical Center. She is also responsible for communicating with medical students, physicians, researchers and administrators within the NIH, and with extramural organizations, institutions of higher education, and training partners on behalf of the OCRTME. Before joining the office in 2009, Ms. Frazier was a Customer Service Representative at the Fannie Mae Corporation, where she served as the lead coordinator for training senior officers in an effort to affect change. Prior to that, she was an Executive Secretary at the IBM Corporation where she applied her organizational, office support and administration skills to develop and implement standardized internal procedures, and to plan and coordinate events. Ms. Frazier is currently pursuing her Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration.

Justin Haynes joined the Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education in June 2011. In his position, Justin provides administrative support to the Graduate Medical Education, Clinical Electives, and Residency/Fellowship Electives programs. He also applies his talents for the accomplishment of cross-functional departmental strategies. Justin is a member of the first graduating class of interns from the NIH's collaboration with Project SEARCH.

As the Clinical Center Director of Diversity Management and Minority Outreach, Walter L. Jones devotes his time to increasing the diversity of clinical researchers in the biomedical research environment. In addition to managing the Clinical Center Summer Internship Program, Mr. Jones routinely interfaces with minority professional and academic programs to increase the awareness of training and career opportunities at the NIH Clinical Center. Mr. Jones has 30 years of professional experience in a variety of healthcare business environments, including several senior positions in the federal government. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Management Science from Binghamton University and a Master's in Health Services Administration from the Johnson School of Management, Cornell University. Mr. Jones also completed the Program for Senior Managers in Government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Juan Lertora

Since 2006, Dr. Lertora has managed the "Principles of Clinical Pharmacology" course offered to NIH trainees and staff scientists and a number of distance learning partners in the USA and abroad. Dr. Lertora oversees special training programs and elective rotations in clinical pharmacology for postdoctoral fellows, residents, and medical and pharmacy students. He also supervises the Clinical Research Curriculum Certificate Program. Dr. Lertora is Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Duke University, and faculty for the NIH-Duke Master's Program in Clinical Research and the FAES Graduate School at NIH. Prior to joining the NIH, Dr. Lertora was Professor of Medicine, Professor of Pharmacology, and Head, Section of Clinical Pharmacology at Tulane University School of Medicine. Dr. Lertora is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, National University of the Northeast (Corrientes, Argentina), and the Tulane University Graduate School where he obtained his Ph.D. in Pharmacology.

Vicki Malick is a Health Education Analyst in the Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education, Clinical Center. She currently handles the NIH Clinical Electives Program for Medical and Dental Students (CEP) and the NIH Resident/Fellows Electives Program (REP). Since 1976, she has devoted much of her career to medical education administration for students and physicians. She administered the NIH Clinical Research Training Program for its first four years from 1997 to 2001. In 2001, she helped create the Intramural Program for Research on Women's Health (IPRWH) and serves on its steering committee. Ms. Malick received her B.S. in Management Studies from the University of Maryland.

Dr. Irena Malkovska serves as the Graduate Medical Education Institutional Program Coordinator in the Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education. She works collaboratively with the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited specialty training program Directors and Coordinators to ensure their ongoing compliance with national standards. Dr. Malkovska graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center with a Ph.D. in neuroscience and received a B.S. in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Daniel McAnally joined the Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education in November 2011. Daniel primarily works with Grand Rounds, CME, other educational programs, and helps provide administrative assistance and support. Before coming to NIH, Daniel served in the United States Peace Corps from 2009 to 2011 in Mali, West Africa. In Mali, Daniel served as a Health Education Volunteer and worked on numerous projects dealing with disease prevention, malnutrition, and water sanitation. Daniel received a Bachelors of Science in Liberal Studies from West Chester University and is a Certified Yoga Alliance Teacher through the Yoga Life Institute in Philadelphia.

Jennifer Simmons serves as the special assistant to the Director of the Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education. In this capacity, she assists with special projects for both OCRTME and Clinical Center (CC), performs tasks associated with intramural-extramural partnerships of the CC, and provides administrative support for OCRTME related to human resources, space, and NIH IC partnerships. Ms. Simmons began her NIH career in 2008 as a management analyst with the National Institute of Mental Health and is a 2010 graduate of the NIH Administrative Fellows Program. Ms. Simmons joined OCRTME in November 2011. She graduated cum laude from Spelman College with a Bachelors of Science in Chemistry and received a Masters in Public Health in Health Administration and Policy from Morehouse School of Medicine.

Kenny J. Williams is the Education Program Coordinator in the Office of Clinical Research Training and Medical Education. His primary role involves administrative responsibilities for the NIH's Medical Research Scholars Program (MRSP), including recruitment, website development, and advertisement. He also is responsible for direct communication with the Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) alumni. Mr. Williams worked with the CRTP since the inception of the program in 1997 and witnessed it grow from nine CRTP fellows to 340 fellows. He is one of the frontline points of contact at the NIH for medical, dental, and veterinary student training opportunities.
