Summer Internships

Eligibility: Current high school, college, and graduate students, including nursing and medical schools who are United States citizens.

Overview: Discover a summer research opportunity at the NIH to bolster your resume and jumpstart your interest in clinical research.

Application Period: Annually from November through March 1.

Training Period: Eight to ten weeks, June through August.

Clinical and Translational Research Course for Ph.D. Students

Eligibility: Graduate students pursuing a PhD in the basic sciences at a U.S. institution who have completed at least one year of graduate study.

Overview: The Clinical and Translational Research Course for Ph.D. Students is a two-week intensive introductory course offered by the NIH Clinical Center (CC). The course provides a foundation in four key areas of clinical and translational research: study design, protocol development and logistics of implementation, ethical considerations in human subjects research, and fundamentals of drug development and FDA regulations.

Application Period: Annually from February 1 to March 1.

Training Period: Two-week intensive course in July.

Medical Research Scholars Program

Eligibility: This program is intended for medical, dental, and veterinary students. Candidates must be currently enrolled in a medical school accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, a dental school that is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, an osteopathic school that is accredited by the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine, or a veterinary medical college that is accredited by the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges. Other eligibility requirements are:

1. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

2. The Medical Research Scholars Program is designed for students who have completed their initial clinical rotations, i.e., typically third-year, but does not exclude students with strong research interests from applying prior to having completed these rotations.

3. Fourth-year students qualify to apply and participate in the Medical Research Scholars Program. However, accepted fourth-year students must defer graduation before participation.

4. Candidates in double degree, e.g., M.D./Ph.D. programs may apply.

Overview: The Medical Research Scholars Program is a comprehensive, year-long research enrichment program designed to attract the most creative, research-oriented medical, osteopathic, and dental students to the intramural campus of the NIH in Bethesda, MD. Scholars engage in a mentored basic, clinical, or translational research project in an area that matches their personal interests and goals.

Application Period: Annually from October 1 through mid January.

Training Period: Twelve months beginning in July and ending as late as August of the following year.

Clinical Electives

Eligibility: You must be enrolled in a medical or dental school and have your school's approval to participate. You must have completed all required core clerkships prior to review of your application. View the full eligibility criteria PDF Icon (34 KB).

Overview: Students participate in short-term clinical rotations designed to provide advanced training in the practice of medicine or surgery, and exposure to translational and clinical research in over 30 specialties.
 
Application Period: Ongoing.
 
Training Period: Typically four weeks; maximum duration of 12 weeks (with approval of rotation director).
