OPENING DOORS TO CAREERS IN CLINICAL RESEARCH

Program Purpose

Opening Doors to Careers in Clinical Research
The purpose of the Clinical Research LRP for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds is to recruit and retain highly qualified health professionals from disadvantaged backgrounds as clinical investigators.

Program Eligibility

  • Meet general eligibility requirements of the LRPs outlined in the eligibility section of the site
  • Have an M.D., Ph.D., Pharm.D., Psy.D., D.O., D.D.S., D.M.D., D.P.M., D.C., N.D., O.D., D.V.M., or equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited institution
  • Engage in qualified clinical research
  • Certify your disadvantaged background status by submitting at least one of the following documents with your application:
    • A written statement from your health professions school(s) indicating that you were qualified for federal disadvantaged assistance during your attendance
    • Documentation that you received Health Professions Student Loans or Loans for Disadvantaged Students
    • Documentation that you received a scholarship from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) under the Scholarship for Individuals with Exceptional Financial Need

Definitions

Clinical Research

Patient-oriented research conducted with human subjects, or research on the causes and consequences of disease in human populations involving material of human origin (such as tissue specimens and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator or colleague directly interacts with human subjects in an outpatient or inpatient setting to clarify a problem in human physiology, pathophysiology or disease, epidemiologic or behavioral studies, outcomes or health services research, or developing new technologies, therapeutic interventions, or clinical trials.

Disadvantaged Background

An Individual from disadvantaged background means an individual who:

(1) Comes from an environment that inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skill and ability required to enroll in and graduate from a health professions school; or

(2) Comes from a family with an annual income below a level based on low-income thresholds according to family size published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, adjusted annually for changes in the Consumer Price Index, and adjusted by the Secretary for use in all health professions programs. The Secretary periodically publishes these income levels in the Federal Register.
