Message from the Director, Stephen I. Katz, M.D., Ph.D.

Almost every household in America is affected in some way by diseases of bones, joints, muscles, and skin — diseases that are the mission areas of the NIAMS. These diseases affect people of all ages, racial and ethnic populations, and economic strata. Many of the diseases within our mandate affect women and minorities disproportionately, and, in many cases, they also suffer worse outcomes. We are committed to uncovering the bases of these gender, racial, and ethnic disparities and devising effective strategies to treat and even prevent them.

I am proud to be the Director of the Institute, and my staff and I are very excited about the research advances that have been realized to date, the initiatives we have identified, and the scientific opportunities that can be pursued. A critical element in our mandate is the education of future scientists who will continue to increase our understanding of these tissues and the diseases that affect them.

I believe that research in bones, joints, muscles, and skin will result in scientific progress and improved health for the public. A comprehensive program to disseminate information to the public, to patients, and their health care providers is another essential component of our mandate.

These responsibilities are what motivate me in directing the NIAMS, and are the driving forces as we fulfill our Institute's scientific mission. Our research belongs ultimately to the American people, for whom we serve as stewards in improving the public's health.
