"SURFing the Information Technology Laboratory"

The Information Technology Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology offers a Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program. This program is designed to provide hands-on research experience in Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Software Testing, Computer Security, Information Access and Networking. Located just outside Washington, DC, available research opportunities include:

Further information on many of these opportunities can be obtained by looking at the descriptions of ongoing Information Technology research given by the National Research Council in their announcement of the NRC postdoctoral research associate program at NIST (then click on National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)), as well as the NIST publication Guide to NIST.
The Fellowship will include a stipend for the 11 week period, in addition to travel and housing allowances. Applications must be submitted by the school; e.g., by the chair of an academic department or by appropriate administrative staff.

Student Eligibility Criteria
Students must be undergraduates at a U.S. university or college with a scientific major, have a G.P.A. of 3.0/4.0 or better (recommended), and are considering pursuing a graduate degree (M.S. or Ph.D.). Students with physics, material science, chemistry, applied mathematics, computer science, or engineering majors are always encouraged to apply. There may be research opportunities for students with other majors.
Plan of Operation
SURFers work directly with NIST Research Advisors
SURFers participate in a weekly research seminar program and in extramural group activities intended to enrich the fellowship experience
Fellows are encouraged to present their research results at national meetings
SURFers are encouraged to pursue their Ph.D. degree
