The NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts is the official publication for NIH medical and behavioral research grant policies, guidelines and funding opportunities. The NIH Guide repository consists of more than 7,000 static html announcement files dating back to 1992 as well as a back-end database that stores various data items about those announcements. In addition, Historical NIH Guide Files from 1970-1992 are available in PDF format.

NIH funding opportunities are published as Requests for Applications (RFAs) and Program Announcements (PAs), which include detailed information about the program, expiration date, receipt date(s), application instructions and contacts. Changes to RFAs and PAs, as well as NIH policy announcements are published as Notices in the NIH Guide. See Description of the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts for more information on NIH Guide announcements and the number system. The following options are available on the Advanced Funding Opportunities & Notices Search page:

• Search Button - Once query options are selected, click the "Search" button to execute the query and display the results screen. When a query is run, all selected options are separated by the "and" joiner. For example, if you select "Issuing Organization" NCI with "Release Date On or After" 7/1/2005 and "Activity Code" R01, then click the "Search" button, this will display all active Funding Opportunities (RFAs & PAs) where the "Issuing Organization" is NCI AND the "Release Date" is On or After 7/1/2005 AND the "Activity Code" R01 is supported, sorted by Release Date.



• Reset Button - This will reset all options on the screen to their original (default) values.



• Search Term(s) - This allows searches through all text of selected announcements for keywords or phrases and renders exact matches only. You may separate multiple search terms with a comma. Entering "diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease" will search for documents that contain the exact search terms "diabetes" AND "liver disease" AND "kidney disease". This is a simple word/phrase search and does not support more advanced searching features. You may use the Advanced OER Site Search (Google) for more robust searching capabilities.



• Issuing Organization - Acronyms that represent the responsible organization for issuing the announcement (default is "All Offices"). See the listing of Organizations Issuing and Participating in NIH Guide Announcements. Note that many announcements also include other Participating Organizations.



• Participating Organization - Acronyms of Organizations that are participating in the announcement. Note that Participating Organizations that are outside of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), may not be reflected on this list. See the listing of Organizations Issuing and Participating in NIH Guide Announcements.



• Release Date - Date of publication in the NIH Guide. Enter From (On or After) and To (On or Before) dates to limit your query to a certain timeframe.



• Opening Date - The earliest date that an electronic application may be submitted to Grants.gov - only applies to those funding opportunities that use the SF 424 application and require electronic submission through Grants.gov. Enter From (On or After) and To (On or Before) dates to limit your query to a certain timeframe. See the Electronic Submission web site for more information on electronic applications, including a Timeline and Transition Dates for individual grant mechanisms.



• Expiration Date - Date that announcement expires. Enter From (On or After) and To (On or Before) dates to limit your query to a certain timeframe. Details about this field for each type of announcement are shown below:
  
  
  • Requests for Applications (RFAs) - The Expiration Date for RFAs is generally one day after the last receipt date. Once an RFA expiration date is reached, applications relating to the RFA will no longer be accepted by the NIH.
  
  
  
  • Program Announcements (PAs) - In general, PAs are active for up to 3 years (9 submission cycles) beyond the initial Release Date. Most PAs issued in 2001 or later will have a specific Expiration Date listed near the top of the document. Those that do not have a date specified in the announcement have been set to expire 3 years after the Release Date, unless an alternate date has been provided by the issuing organization. Once the expiration date is reached, applications should no longer be submitted for the PA. If an application is submitted that cites an expired PA, it may be delayed in the review process or returned without review.
    
    Important: Note that a PA Expiration Date may not coincide exactly with the actual final submission date for the PA. Applicants should refer to the Submission Dates/Deadlines page for the final submission date that precedes the stated expiration date, based on the Mechanism(s) of Support shown in the PA.
    
    Also, note that PARs will sometimes have a single receipt date. In those cases, the expiration date will be the day after the receipt date.
  
  
  
  • Notices - All Notices are considered active since they do not have specific expiration dates. This field is populated with "n/a" for all Notices. Note that when "Notices" is selected in the "Files to Display" section, the "Active/Inactive Status" field is automatically set to "All". In the future, NIH hopes to add expiration dates for Notices to allow for "active" listings to be generated.
  
  
  
• Activity Code (Type of Grant) - This is a 3-digit code (e.g. R01) that identifies the specific extramural grant funding mechanism (type of grant program). See Types of Grant Programs page for a listing of NIH Activity Codes. In addition, a comprehensive list of all activity codes is available. Some funding opportunities may have multiple associated Activity Codes. This field is populated for all active RFAs and PAs. However, Activity Code data may not be available for funding announcements released prior to July 1, 2003 and is not applicable to Notices.



• Activity Code Text Includes - This will allow for ad hoc searches of the Activity Codes field (see item above for more information on Activity Codes). For example, enter "R" to retrieve announcements that include the text "R", such as R01, R03, R15, R21, etc. This can also be used to retrieve "P" (Program Project and other multi-project), "U" (Cooperative Agreement), "T" (Training) and "K" (Career) related announcements. In addition, you may separate multiple search terms with a comma - e.g. use "R01, R21, R03" to search for announcements that support R01 or R21 or R03 Activity Codes. Or use "T, K, F" to search for Activity Codes beginning with T or K or F.



• Title Text - This allows searches on the Title of selected announcements for the single word or phrase entered and renders exact matches only. This is a simple word/phrase search and does not support multiple search terms or more advanced searching features. You may use the Advanced OER Site Search (Google) for more robust searching capabilities.



• Application Package - Searches for the type of Application Package used to apply for grant support relating to the funding opportunity. As of December 1, 2005 submission dates, some NIH funding opportunities use the SF424 Electronic application package - see the Electronic Submission web site, the SF424 (R&R) Application and Electronic Submission Information page and the NIH Forms and Applications page for more information. Prior to this time, the PHS 398 application was used in applying for NIH grant support. In addition, as of June 25, 2008, NIH began pilot testing Adobe application packages (see NOT-OD-08-098).



• Parent Announcement (unsolicited or investigator-initiated) - All electronic applications must be submitted in response to a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA). NIH and other HHS Agencies have developed omnibus Parent announcements for common grant mechanisms that have transitioned to electronic submission, for use by applicants who wish to submit what were formerly termed “unsolicited” or "investigator-initiated" applications. This query feature will identify Parent Announcements in the NIH Guide. Also see the Parent Announcements page for a list of current Parent Announcements and further information.



• Active/Inactive Status - Here, you can limit your search results based to Active (default), Inactive or All announcements based on the Expiration Date (see Expiration Date section above). All Notices are considered Active since they do not carry an expiration date. Thus, when "Notices" is selected in the "Files to Display" section, the "Active/Inactive Status" field is automatically set to "All".



• Files to Display - This option lets you limit search results to just Funding Opportunities (RFAs & PAs) (default), RFAs, PAs, Notices, or All types of announcements. In addition, you may display a subset of PAs (PAs Only, PARs Only or PASs Only). See Description of the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts for more information on types of NIH Guide announcements.



• Sort Listing - Here, you can specify how search results will be sorted, including primary and secondary sort options (default primary sort is "Release Date").

The following information is displayed on Funding Opportunities and Notices Search Results pages:

• Page Title: - A description of search criteria will be shown at the top left of each search results screen, below the "(Advanced) Funding Opportunities & Notices Search Results" line (e.g. "Active Funding Opportunities (RFAs & PAs)").



• Search Term(s): - In addition to search criteria, any Search Term(s) will show on the top left of each search results screen (separated by commas).



• Search within Results - Most search results screens will provide a search box to search within the results on the screen. This will run a search using any previous search term(s) plus the new search term(s).



• Matching Records - Displays the number of records found, which matched your search criteria.



• Sorted by - Indicates how records on the page are sorted. The main Funding Opportunities & Notices search will allow re-sorting by clicking on header links. The Advanced Funding Opportunities & Notices Search provides the ability to sort results listings based on any two fields and must be set as part of the initial query.



• Announcement Number - Official number assigned by NIH relating to the announcement. See Description of the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts for more information on NIH Guide announcements and the number system.



• Related Announcements - This will search Active and Inactive Funding Opportunities & Notices (NIH Guide files) for the occurrence of the related announcement number (e.g. RFA-HL-05-020) anywhere in document text. This can be helpful in finding related announcements, when a notice or multiple notices are issued that amend or update funding opportunities, or when a funding opportunity has been superseded. In many cases, there are no related announcements, thus, the search will only reflect the selected document.



• Issuing Organization - Acronyms that represent the responsible organization for issuing the announcement. See the listing of Organizations Issuing and Participating in NIH Guide Announcements. Note that many announcements also include other Participating Organizations.



• Release Date - Date of publication in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts.



• Expiration Date - Date that the announcement expires. RFAs and PAs will have associated expiration dates, however, Notices do not have specific expiration dates, thus are all considered as active. See above for more information on expiration dates.
