Emergency Message for U.S. Citizens - 09/29/13
Consulate General Erbil is currently monitoring reports of an apparent coordinated attack on the Asayish Headquarters in Erbil involving multiple vehicle borne improvised explosive devices and small arms fire (gunshots). Authorities in the Kurdistan Regional Government are advising all persons to remain indoors and have informed the public that roads throughout the city are closed. The Consulate encourages all U.S. Citizens in the city of Erbil to heed these messages. -
Iraq Travel Warning
The Department of State warns U.S. citizens against all but essential travel to Iraq. Travel within Iraq remains dangerous given the security situation. This Travel Warning replaces the Travel Warning dated February 25, 2013, to update information on security incidents and to remind U.S. citizens of ongoing security concerns in Iraq, including kidnapping and terrorist violence. The ability of the Embassy to respond to situations in which U.S. citizens face difficulty, including arrests, is extremely limited.

The Department of State has issued this Worldwide Caution to update information on the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against U.S. citizens and interests throughout the world. U.S. citizens are reminded to maintain a high level of vigilance and to take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness. This replaces the Worldwide Caution dated February 19, 2013, to provide updated information on security threats and terrorist activities worldwide.
