every word

On Thursday, December 3, 2020, the Senate passed H.R. 473 by unanimous consent, authorizing the creation of Washington, D.C’s first outdoor monument honoring the women’s suffrage movement. The legislation, which passed through the House in February 2020 with the support of the Women's Suffrage Centennial Commission, is now awaiting the President's signature. The Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commission was honored to work with Congress to ensure that all Americans will be inspired by the radical women who waged and won the battle for the ballot through the Every Word We Utter Monument.

Designed by renowned sculptor Jane DeDecker, the Every Word We Utter Monument will be cast in bronze and is approximated to stand 21-22 feet tall with a 10 feet circular base. The monument depicts Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and her daughter Harriot Stanton Blatch, Sojourner Truth, Alice Paul, and Ida B. Wells. These women encapsulate both the sustained activism of the suffrage movement over multiple generations as well as the diversity and patriotism of this movement. Each of the depicted women brought something unique and irreplaceable to the fight for suffrage.

The true art of this statue lies not only in who it depicts physically, but in the symbolism of continuation and futurity for equality which it encapsulates.
