Announce Winners and Distribute the Challenge Prize

Challenge Implementation—Step 4 of 4

Public voting has ended and the judges have tallied their votes. Now what happens? The next step is to hand out the awards.

In past prize competitions (PDF, 1.04 MB, 39 pages, August 2011), winners have been paid by Electronic Funds Transfer, from the agency to the winner's bank account. But this is just one example. Consult with your agency’s budget and procurement shop early and often so they can help you distribute the prize money in a timely fashion. Timeliness is very important; if winners are paid on–time it will encourage participation in future challenges your agency runs.

Keep your challenge information updated on Challenge.gov. People should be able to find information about the winners on Challenge.gov. If it says “winners to be determined” for a long period of time, current and future contestants might get discouraged.

Consider holding an awards ceremony, if your budget allows. This gives your winners and entrants additional recognition, and also encourages participation in your agency’s future challenges.

If winners come to town for a ceremony, consider filming one–on–one interviews. Winners can tell you what winning meant to them, adding to the impact of your challenge.

Next Step

After you have implemented your challenge, the next step is to improve it.
