Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) provides the San Francisco, CA region with one of the most innovative public transportation services in the United States. Now BART offers developers the BART API. The BART API provides real-time estimated time of arrival (ETA) feeds, transit schedules, advisory feeds, and trip planning information. Our new BART API profile has details and joins a growing list of transit-related APIs including government-sponsored web services Portland’s Trimet API as well as commercial services like the Hopstop API and Urban Mapping’s Mass Transit Proximity API which we covered earlier this month.
ReadWriteWeb’s Rick Turoczy recently reported in “Dark Side of the Cloud” the recent incident that resulted in a loss of data for ylastic, a company that facilitates management of Amazon’s AWS environments for businesses.
Every now and then a sharp developer uncovers a clue that leads to discovery of an undocumented, but quite real, web API. A case in point is the folks over at SEO services company Index Content, who noted in their blog yesterday that the popular social news web site Reddit has an API. But don’t go looking for any documentation, because it doesn’t look like there is any, at least not yet (for reference we’ve created a Reddit API summary in our directory and will update it if/when this becomes an officially supported API).
Yieldex, the online ad inventory forecasting and optimization start-up, has won the second annual Amazon Web Services Start-Up Challenge. As grand prize winner, Yieldex receives US $50,000 in cash and $50,000 in AWS service credits, along with the possibility of an investment offer from Amazon. “Visibility Delivered” is Yieldex’s motto; by winning perhaps the biggest web services start-up competition, they’ve certainly delivered visibility for themselves.

Hoover’s, the business information company, has released their own Hoover’s API, aka “HAPI”. This new API enables developers to create applications that utilize Hoover’s database of 27 million companies and 34 million business executives (details at our Hoover’s API profile). This is certainly useful data for a variety of enterprise applications.
Earlier this week Intuit announced the release of a new web application that allows QuickBooks users to visualize customer data on a map mashup. The Customer Explorer, developed by SpatialKey, is provided as a free service in the Intuit Workplace, a portal that provides QuickBooks users with access to various types of applications and add-ons.
Microsoft has released a significantly enhanced version of their Live Search API. Live Search API 2.0 offers increased flexibility in terms of API protocols (REST/XML and JSON are now offered, in addition to the original SOAP interface), new tools, sample code, and complete documentation.
Elsevier, the world’s leading publisher of science and health information, has announced the Article 2.0 Contest, which invites developers to create innovative applications related to scientific journals and articles using the Elsevier Article 2.0 API. The contest runs through December 31, and offers prizes of $4000, $2000, and $1000 (US) to three contest winners. The contest is specifically seeking web-based applications that provide unique, innovative means for finding and rendering scientific articles.
Popular “hyperlocal” news and information service Outside.in recently released an API (our Outside.in API Profile) that provides developers with a way to access up-to-the-minute, location-based news. Based on its “news around you” feature, Radar, the API provides access to various types of information, including the latest news stories, blog posts, Twitter tweets and more located within 1,000 feet of a specific location.
