This past week 15 new mashups were added to our mashup directory and 20 different APIs were used to build them. Some of the newer or less frequently seen APIs include Amazon SES, ESPN, Geoportail, Readability , Readmill, ReadSocial and Topsy. The most often used APIs this week are Facebook, Google Maps and Twitter. And the most commonly used types of APIs were Social (6 APIs, 10 mashups), Mapping (3 APIs, 7 mashups) and Music (1 APIs, 1 mashups). The list below shows which APIs were used by which mashups:
Hackathons are a fast growing phenomenom where developers come together, usually in short periods up to 72 hours to submit ideas, form teams and hack together applications, data visualizations and sometimes form business models around their ideas. ProgrammableWeb is tracking 14 hackathons coming in the next couple weeks all around the world.
We now list over 5,400 APIs and 6,500 mashups in our directory. It would not have been possible to reach this point without the wonderful sponsors that made it all possible. We’re pleased to offer you this chance to learn more about the companies that help us make our site the resource that it is.

We reported at the beginning of March that 37signals launched the new version of Basecamp, its much acclaimed project management tool. A Basecamp API for integration partners was still missing at that point. Now the company follows up with “the all new API for the all new Basecamp”, as David Heinemeier Hansson of Ruby on Rails fame puts it in his announcement.
We all know about Google Plus. We’ve talked about it here and here and it’s been covered in a million other places. Today though, we’re not concerned with how it stacks up to Facebook. Instead we just want to look at the cool things being built with the Google Plus API. These mashups all use Google Plus to support shopping, news aggregation and even other social networks.
Google updated its OAuth playground, a tool to try out several of its many Google APIs. There’s finally a new Basecamp API to go along with the updated version of the site. Plus: why APIs suck, Sweden’s second-best API and 10 new APIs.
Google continues to march forward with its monthly release cycle for the Google App Engine API. With Google I/O coming up, the team clearly has its priorities clear in introducing features and changes that should help them get the message across to developers that the App Engine platform is in good hands. The latest release, App Engine 1.6.4 comes less than a month from the earlier one and is probably one of the most feature packed release in recent times.
With use cases in chat, advertising and photo sharing, the Face.com API now estimates the age of the faces it finds in photos. The service released mood detection last July and has seen the number of developers registered on its platform double in less than a year. The age estimation is hardly perfect, but gives a guideline that joins a number of attributes the service can return from just a snapshot.
Law practice and case management software has been around for years. These Programs gave lawyers the ability to focus on what they love to do and simplified the recurring tasks that are incurred when running a law practice. However, many lawyers don’t work solely from the comfort of their office where these tools have been easily accessible in the past. Thankfully, we now have “Cloud Based Law Practice Management”, allowing lawyers to access the tools that they use to manage day to day operations anywhere that they have an internet connection.
Google quickly ushered its Google Plus Hangouts API out of preview mode, meaning apps built on the service can now be launched. Facebook also made changes to its API, bringing location to photo and status objects. Plus: redefining TV Guide via API, an OpenSocial platform and 17 new APIs.
