Meet More Execs with Internal Social Networks

Do you know what your coworkers are doing?

If your organization uses enterprise social networking, you do. ESN’s are internal tools riffing off Twitter and Facebook-type platforms.

The instant messaging, photo and document sharing and other “put it on the wall” activities  increase collaboration among employees across the organization, according to the Altimeter Group study “Making the Business Case for Enterprise Social Networking.”

Altimeter found ESN’s:

  • Encourage sharing
  • Capture knowledge
  • Enable action
  • Empower employees

People who don’t normally find themselves in the same room together collaborate spontaneously and build a sense of community. And you benefit by being in the “same space” online with colleagues, no matter their location or job level.  (Who wouldn’t love to be friends with the administrators?)

by their very nature encourage sharing – have the potential to make office communications more fluid and efficient by forming ad-hoc collaboration, avoiding duplication in projects, streamlining processes and increasing the flow of information among hierarchical levels.

Share some of the best and worst of your examples.

Our agency is using Salesforce Chatter and I love it. It’s fun, and a great way to educate employees about new initiatives. Employees can join groups, ask questions, and get answers. A lot of times, I know SOMEONE in my agency knows the answer. It’s just a matter of finding that person, or someone who knows them. Really no way to reach EVERY employee, but Chatter allows me to get my message out to a lot of people.
