Economists

Candidates selected for these positions will perform research and analysis affecting housing finance and financial markets, and support the examinations of Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae or any of the 12 Federal Home Loan Banks (Government Sponsored Enterprises).  FHFA Economists primarily work in the Divisions of Housing Mission and Goals and Bank Regulation. Economists are located in Washington, DC.

Example of Economist Duties:

Draft reports supporting conclusions with analysis based on data and other sources in a manner that ensures the work can be replicated and supported.

Conduct research on topics including but not limited to: performance of the Government Sponsored Enterprises (GSEs); risk measurement and management at the GSEs; and the role of the GSEs in housing finance.

Prepare and present the results from economic, financial and monitoring reports to senior agency officials.

Prepare written policies, procedures, and manuals to document assumptions, methodologies, and procedures used for generating standardized reports.

Participate in the development and analysis of new regulations, orders, policies, or advisory bulletins that should be undertaken to respond to potential threats to the safety and soundness of the GSEs.

Conduct complex analyses, using SAS or comparable software, of data.

Collaborate and consult on economic matters pertaining to housing finance, financial markets, financial institution regulation, and the GSEs.

Successful Candidates:

The background and experience we’re seeking at various levels will normally include the following:

Technical Experts and Manager candidates will have a bachelor’s degree or higher in economics and experience serving as an expert on economic theories and models; conducting or leading advanced economic research or analysis projects; and/or providing guidance in relevant theories, empirical methods, or other topics related to economics, finance, or housing issues.

Journeyman level candidates will have a bachelor’s degree or higher in economics and  three or more years of experience  conducting qualitative or quantitative research; conducting econometric research and analysis of financial and economic issues, applying statistical software applications and analytical techniques to financial and economic data; and producing empirical economic studies.

Entry-level candidates will have a bachelor’s or higher level degree in economics.

Salary:

  • Technical experts and manager level (EL-15) salaries:  $128,811 to $218,978
  • Journeyman level (EL-11/12/13/14) salaries: $71,610 to $189,501
  • Entry-level (EL-5/7/9) salaries: $36,711 to $93,465

Individual salary rates will be determined by the selected candidate’s education, experience and location.
