Glacial Lakes Disappearing Act Caught on Film

CIRES graduate student Ulyana Horodyskyj's captured a glacial lake in the Himalaya losing the equivalent of 42 Olympic-size swimming pools of water overnight when she installed three cameras in the glacier walls. Horodyskyj is investigating how lakes atop of glaciers in Himalaya could contribute to the deflation of glaciers in the region. Megaquake Potential in the Himalayas

CIRES Fellow Roger Bilham cautions a magnitude 9 earthquake in Kashmir is a possibility based on eight years of GPS in the region. Such an earthquake could have the potential to dam the Jhelum river causing disastrous flooding, Bilham says. Read more about it in the New Scientist and the Washington Post.

Investigating the Impact of Shrinking Glaciers on Asia's water supply

The U.S. government has enlisted CIRES Fellow Richard Armstrong and geography professor Mark Williams to determine how disappearing Himalayan glaciers will affect water supplies to people in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Nepal and Pakistan. Read the article in the Denver Post here.

From Backyard to Front Cover

An image of rain observed by a radar built by CIRES' Christopher Williams is on the front cover of the November issue of IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters. ESRL-CIRES Fellowships

Currently accepting applications until January 15, 2012

The NOAA Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL)-CIRES Graduate Research Fellowship program is a competitive, educational award program designed to foster interactive research and academic excellence for exceptional prospective students and current first- and second-year CIRES students advised by a CIRES faculty advisor and NOAA-ESRL science advisor in earth system sciences and environmental science policy. The Fellowship allows students to pursue a master's or doctoral degree in a CIRES-affiliated department or program at CU Boulder, while working with the world-class research team at NOAA's Earth System Research Laboratory (ESRL). Students will work with both a CIRES faculty advisor and an ESRL science advisor. Awards include tuition, partial health insurance, half-time stipend during the academic year, full-time stipend during the summer, and support to participate in one professional meeting per year. Students may be funded for up to two (master's) or four (Ph.D.) years. Read more.

Robert Sievers on Developing an Inhalable Vaccine for Measles

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's Grand Challenges in Global Health has unrolled a video highlighting the work of CIRES Fellow Robert Sievers and his team to create a dried powder inhalant vaccine for measles. It would pave the way toward needle-free immunization in the developing world and is currently in Phase I clinical trials. Watch the video.

CIRES welcomes 12 Visiting Fellows for the 2011-12 year. These visiting sabbatical and post-doctoral researchers will contribute to CIRES cutting-edge research in the environmental sciences. Every year since 1967, CIRES awards several competitive NOAA-sponsored visiting fellowships to researchers seeking opportunities for rewarding collaborations in a world-class research setting.
