  The 2010 State Justice Statistics (SJS) Program supports the collection, analysis, and dissemination of statistical information on crime and criminal justice at the state and local level. The SJS Program is designed to maintain and enhance each state's capacity to address criminal justice issues through collection and analysis of data. The program provides limited funds to coordinate statistical activities within the state, conduct research as needed to estimate impacts of legislative and policy changes, and serve a liaison role in assisting BJS to gather data from respondent agencies within their states. Each application for funding under this program must identify the participating organizations in the state and the particular issues to be addressed.

FY 2010 NICS Act Record Improvement Program (NARIP) for States and State Court Systems Solicitation

  This program furthers the Department's mission by improving the records utilized by NICS by providing assistance to states to improve the completeness, automation, and transmittal of records to state and federal systems. Such records include criminal history records, records of felony convictions, warrants, records of protective orders, convictions for misdemeanors involving domestic violence and stalking, records of mental health adjudications, and others, which may disqualify an individual from possessing or receiving a firearm under federal law. Helping states to automate these records will also reduce delays for law-abiding gun purchasers.

2010 Assessment of Administrative Data on Elder Abuse, Mistreatment, and Neglect Solicitation

  The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) is seeking proposals to examine the problem of elder abuse, mistreatment, and neglect through the collection of data on cases of suspected elder abuse referred to Adult Protective Services (APS) agencies and cases reported to local law enforcement. The goals of this program are two-fold: 1) to examine the characteristics of cases of suspected elder abuse referred to APS and/or reported to police, in order to understand routes of reporting of elder abuse, as well as whether certain case characteristics impact case outcomes; and 2) to ascertain the feasibility of an ongoing and expanded collection of administrative data on cases of suspected elder abuse, mistreatment and neglect.

National Corrections Reporting Program 2010-2013 Solicitation

2010-2012 Deaths in Custody Reporting Program: Arrest-Related Deaths Solicitation

In addition, BJS is seeking assistance in the development of alternative designs for the 2012 ARD Program. The recipient of funds will assist BJS in transitioning toward a more uniform, nationwide collection of statistical information on the prevalence and characteristics of arrest-related deaths.

  BJS is dedicated to collecting information on issues relevant to the criminal justice community. In an effort to enhance our statistical products, BJS held a meeting on May 13, 2010 to assess the current state and future direction of the Arrest-Related Deaths (ARD) data collection program. The purpose of the meeting was to solicit feedback from researchers, state reporting agents, law enforcement officials, and members of the medical community in order to improve the ARD data collection instrument and the overall utility and quality of the data. The redesigned program will collect drug use data and will produce reliable estimates of the prevalence of drug use among arrestees.
