Whether you want to be a criminal prosecutor, civil litigator,  policy developer,  or counsel and advisor, there are opportunities for you at DOJ.

We encourage you to discuss these opportunities, as well as the Department’s application processes, with your law school career services or public interest advisor.

If you would like to find out more about Justice or a particular DOJ component or office by talking one-on-one with a Justice attorney you may contact one of our DOJ Ambassadors.

Volunteer Legal Internships

Challenging work. Lots of responsibility. Interesting people. These are some of the phrases that students use to describe their experience as volunteer legal interns at the U.S. Department of Justice. Justice offers approximately 1,800 volunteer internships each year. Approximately 1,000 are available during the summer; and 800 offered during the academic year.

Summer Law Intern Program

The Summer Law Intern Program (SLIP) is the Department's competitive recruitment program for compensated summer internships.  Each year, we hire approximately 100 -120 paid summer legal interns. The majority of SLIP hires are second year law students who work at Justice the summer between their second and third years of law school.  The SLIP is also open to recent law school graduates between graduation and the start of a judicial clerkship or full-time qualifying legal fellowship.
