Most of the heart failure is caused by an initial heart attack. After heart attack the heart repairs itself by creating a scar because of the fibroblast activations. What is unfortunate is that despite the fact that the original heart attack has stopped, it turns out the heart continues to enlarge by itself and get weaker and weaker, and part of it has been attributed to inappropriate and persistent scar formation by the persistent activation of the fibroblast. What we have found is that part of this abnormal fibroblast activation requires the free radical production by NADPH Nox4.
