Job Openings

IHS has vacancies in facilities large and small in some of the most beautiful areas of the United States. Current openings are listed on the IHS web site under Jobs and Scholarships. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to "Professional Categories" and select "Optometrist".

Unlike the other uniformed services, in the Indian Health Service there is no central office which assigns Commissioned Officers to positions. Most IHS positions may be filled either by a Commissioned Officer or by a Civil Service Employee. Recruitment and hiring is done by the local facility and application is made to the Area personnel office. Some Areas accept CV's and keep them on file for future openings.

Tribally run programs usually hire optometrists as employees of the tribe but may allow present employees to remain Civil Servants for a period of time and may allow the assignment of Commissioned Officers. Application is made directly to the tribe.

See IHS Optometry Personnel Systems for information on the three personnel systems.
