NIH Visiting Program for Training and Research
The NIH has long considered close interaction with foreign scientists in the conduct of collaborative research to be an essential ingredient in achieving its objectives. Annually, more than 2,000 scientists from over 100 countries conduct research in the basic and clinical science laboratories on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Maryland and in several field units across the United States.
There are two categories of Visiting Program participants: Visiting Fellows, who receive awards for research training, and Visiting Scientists who receive appointments to conduct research. Each participant works closely with a senior NIH investigator who serves as supervisor or sponsor during the period of award or appointment. All Visiting Program participants must possess valid U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) employment authorization. Visiting Fellows
Visiting Fellows must have a doctoral degree or equivalent in the health sciences and not more than five years of relevant postdoctoral research experience at the start of the fellowship period. Visiting Fellows are not employees of the NIH but are considered Trainees, and receive a monthly stipend to cover living expenses. The stipend level is determined by the number of years of relevant postdoctoral research experience. For stipend details, see the Trainee Stipends page. Visiting Scientists
Visiting Scientists who are engaged in either health-related research, or science administration, or science policy may be appointed a staff position at the NIH thru a special hiring authority referred to as Title 42. Under this hiring authority, the individual is considered an NIH employee, receives salary and, depending on the length of appointment, receives most of the benefits available to employees of the U.S. Government.
