IACP Technology Center
The IACP Technology Center is designed to function as a comprehensive resource for law enforcement agencies and IACP Members in planning, implementing and managing technology to a) improve public and officer safety and homeland security, b) enhance the effectiveness of operations and the efficient use of resources, and c) support and encourage the professional development of law enforcement personnel, public safety agencies and IACP Members.

Technology programs addressed by the Center are broadly arrayed, ranging from Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR), in-car cameras, and biometric identification technologies to national information sharing initiatives such as the National Data Exchange (N-DEx) program and the Nationwide Suspicious Activity Reporting Initiative (NSI).

Law Enforcement Information Management (LEIM) SectionLinkedIn
The IACP LEIM Section provides law enforcement executives, IT managers, and technology specialists with a forum in which to share information, leading practices and lessons learned regarding state-of-the-art law enforcement information management, communications and interoperability, technology standards, and information sharing. Comprised of over 1,000 members, the LEIM Section is a rich source of information for chiefs, operational practitioners, and technologists. If you are not already a member, Join Today!

The LEIM Section has created a Subgroup of IACP on LinkedIn. The LEIM Section Subgroup is open to all IACP LEIM Section members. This Subgroup is our initial effort to build a dynamic community of practice among law enforcement executives, operational managers, and information technology professionals. The primary objectives are to share best practices, lessons learned, and issues of common concern. Please join today!

IACP Committees Addressing Technology
IACP hosts several committees that deal directly with law enforcement technology, including the Communications & Technology Committee, the Criminal Justice Information Systems (CJIS) Committee, and the Computer Crime & Digital Evidence (CCDE) Committee. LE - ITS Technology Clearinghouse
The IACP Technology Clearinghouse, funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation, Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS JPO), maintains a comprehensive Web-based library of resources providing executives and technologists with contemporary information on leading law enforcement information technology projects. The 2012 LEIM Conference, which was held May 21-23 in Indianapolis, was very successful. A total of 490 people attended the conference, which featured plenary sessions and a host of substantive workshops. Among attendees were 88 members of the LEIM Section of IACP. More information regarding the 2012 LEIM Conference will be posted shortly.

FCC: Minimum Technical Requirements for First Responder Interoperability
The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) approved for tranmittal to the First Responder Network Authority (FirstNet) the minimum technical requirements submitted by the Technical Advisory Board for First Responder Interoperability Interoperability Board on June 21, 2012. The report, entitled Recommended Minimum Technical Requirements to Ensure Nationwide Interoperability for the Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network, sets forth the recommended minimum technical requirements for interoperability. A full copy of the document and supporting appendices can be found on the FCC website.

NIST Guidelines on Security and Privacy in Public Cloud Computing
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) released Special Publication 800-144, Guidelines on Security and Privacy in Cloud Computing (PDF) in December 2011. "This publication provides an overview of the security and privacy challenges pertinent to public cloud computing and points out considerations organizations should take when outsourcing data, applications, and infrastructure to a public cloud environment."

 NIST Biometric Standards 
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) recently published revised standards for biometric data exchange. The new standard, Data Format for the Interchange of Fingerprint, Facial & Other Biometric Information (ANSI/NIST-ITL 1-2011, NIST Special Publication 500-290 (PDF 5.4MB)), also includes new types of biometric data, including DNA and footprints. IACP Center for Social Media
The IACP, in partnership with the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), Office of Justice Programs, U.S. Department of Justice, has launched the IACP Center for Social Media, a project to build the capacity of law enforcement to use social media and related tools to prevent and solve crimes, strengthen police community relations, recruit employees, and enhance services. The cornerstone of the project is the website www.IACPsocialmedia.org. The website contains a host of no-cost resources, including a model policy, fact sheets, case studies, and instructional tutorials.
