Lisa Pino has served the United States Department
of Agriculture since her appointment in May, 2009 by President
Obama and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack as Deputy Administrator
of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, also known
as the SNAP program. After three years of service, Ms. Pino
has joined USDA’s Office of the Assistant Secretary
for Civil Rights as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary. In
this new role, she will continue her commitment to ensuring
equality and fair treatment to all USDA program recipients
and USDA employees.
During her prior work at the Department, Ms. Pino dedicated
her service to strengthening USDA food and nutrition assistance
programs for low-income children, individuals, and families,
and to ending the nation’s hunger and obesity challenges.
In this spirit, her accomplishments include improving access
and compliance with USDA programs, championing civil rights
priorities, contributing to MyPlate education and awareness,
representing the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative
to ending childhood obesity on efforts including Let’s
Move! in Indian Country, participating in White House community
discussions around the country, strengthening partnerships
with national and community organizations, mentoring college
students during USDA collaborations with colleges and universities,
and serving on federal interagency initiatives dedicated to
ending health disparities.
Prior to her work at USDA, Ms. Pino was the Director of Public
Affairs for the HITN-TV network in New York, and Director
of Public Affairs for IIA College in Arizona. An attorney,
her background in community work includes a focus on serving
low-income communities in areas such as law, housing, education,
labor, employment, and immigration. She has additionally served
the Florence Immigrant Rights and Refugee Project, Community
Legal Services Farmworker Unit, Littler Global Migration Group,
the U.S. Government Accountability Office, U.S. Attorney's
Office of New York, and the U.S. Library of Congress.
A New York native, she received her B.A., M.A., and J.D.
at Arizona State University, and she is a member of the Arizona
Bar. In 2008, she completed Harvard University's Executive
Public Leadership program as a National Hispana Leadership
Institute Fellow, and The White House Project Program in New
York. Ms. Pino is a recent award recipient for her commitment
to public service, and continues her dedication to service
at USDA.
