Tribal Consultation Policy

On November 5, 2009, President Barack Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum directing each agency to submit a detailed plan of action describing how the agency will implement the policies and directives of Executive Order 13175.

Since that time, the Department has established a joint federal-tribal team to develop a Department-wide policy on Tribal consultation with certain goals.  The policy strives to include elements that:

  • honor the government-to-government relationship;
  • involve the appropriate level of decision maker in a consultation process;
  •  promote innovations in communication by including a Department-wide tribal governance officer;
  • detail early tribal involvement in the design of a process implicating tribal interests; and
  • capture a wide range of policy and decision making processes under the consultation umbrella.

Thiswebpage provides information related to the ongoing development of a Department-wide policy process, including the upcoming drafting of a separate supplemental policy for Alaska Native Corporations.
