Tribal Consultation Policy
On November 5, 2009, President Barack Obama issued a Presidential Memorandum directing each agency to submit a detailed plan of action describing how the agency will implement the policies and directives of Executive Order 13175.
Since that time, the Department has established a joint federal-tribal team to develop a Department-wide policy on Tribal consultation with certain goals. The policy strives to include elements that:

- honor the government-to-government relationship;
- involve the appropriate level of decision maker in a consultation process;
- promote innovations in communication by including a Department-wide tribal governance officer;
- detail early tribal involvement in the design of a process implicating tribal interests; and
- capture a wide range of policy and decision making processes under the consultation umbrella.
