NHLBI Centers of Excellence Meet to Discuss Global Health

On December 16-17, 2009, representatives from all institutions in the UnitedHealth and NHLBI Collaborating Centers of Excellence joined NHLBI staff members in Bethesda, Md. for their first semi-annual steering committee meeting. Supported by the NHLBI and by the UnitedHealth Chronic Disease Initiative, the Centers of Excellence are a remarkable team effort stretching across oceans and cultures to confront chronic non-communicable cardiovascular and pulmonary diseases in low and middle income countries.

Stem Cell Treatment Reverses Sickle Cell Disease in Adults

Researchers from the NIH Clinical Center and three NIH institutes, including the NHLBI, have used stem cell transplants to reverse sickle cell disease in severely affected adults. Eighty thousand Americans and millions of people worldwide currently suffer from sickle cell disease, where deformed and oxygen-poor red blood cells can cause anemia, severe pain, organ damage, stroke, and sudden death.

Human Embryonic Stem Cell Lines Approved for Use

On Wednesday, December 2, 2009, NIH Director Francis Collins announced that 13 human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines are now approved for federally funded research. Another 27 lines are currently under review. These are the first hESC lines to be approved since the NIH adopted its Guidelines for Human Stem Cell Research in July. Thirty-one NIH hESC grants—including several NHLBI-funded grants—have been on hold, waiting for cell lines to be approved for use. Some of the studies are now able to move forward.

Betsy Nabel’s departure from the NHLBI today, en route to becoming the President of Brigham and Women's/Faulkner Hospitals in Boston, is the end of a remarkable term of service benefitting science and the public. She will be sorely missed by all of us who have had the privilege of working with her.
