2010 AWARDS EVENT

On October 13, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) staged the biggest and best Voice Awards since its inception in 2005. More than 500 guests attended to honor writers and producers who have given a voice to individuals with behavioral health problems by incorporating dignified, respectful, and accurate portrayals of these individuals into TV and film productions. During the event, SAMHSA Administrator Pamela Hyde, J.D., shared a letter from First Lady Michelle Obama and Second Lady Jill Biden honoring America’s men and women in uniform and their families—and the entertainment programming that has brought national attention to their stories of sacrifice, resilience, and recovery.

Hosted by Emmy Award-winning actor Hector Elizondo and Academy Award-winning actor Louis Gossett, Jr., the fifth anniversary star-studded event celebrated Voice Award-winning productions that included “The Dry Land,” “Army Wives,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and Sesame Street’s “Coming Home,” and consumer/peer leaders have worked tirelessly to promote the social inclusion of individuals with behavioral health problems and the real possibility of recovery.

Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter was honored with a SAMHSA Lifetime Leadership in Behavioral Health Award for her work in championing mental health awareness over the past 40 years. Celebrity presenters included America Ferrera from “The Dry Land,” Sandra Oh from ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” Peter Krause from NBC’s “Parenthood,” Julia Ormond from HBO’s “Temple Grandin,” and Mark Indelicato from ABC’s “Ugly Betty.”

This exciting event brought together representatives from the entertainment industry and consumer/peer and advocacy movements to celebrate increased awareness of behavioral health and recovery.
