ODPHP Opportunities

Fellowship Opportunities

  • Luther L. Terry Senior Fellowship in Preventive Medicine Application
The Luther L. Terry Senior Fellowship in Preventive Medicine provides intensive experience in a health policy setting, while the fellow benefits ODPHP by providing clinical, research, and population health expertise to support the Department’s health promotion and disease prevention goals.

Educational Opportunities

Experience in public health and healthcare policy development is essential in the training of future public health leaders and medical professionals. ODPHP provides an outstanding opportunity to gain experience in the formation of public health and healthcare policy at the federal level. ODPHP does this by offering rotations to college and graduate students, preventive medicine and primary care residents, HHS Emerging Leaders, and other scholars. Please note that all assignments are unpaid. While at ODPHP, these visiting scholars will have opportunities to:

  • Assist in the implementation of Presidential and Secretarial initiatives, Healthy People 2020, Dietary Guidelines for Americans, Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, and ODPHP-specific projects.
  • Experience first-hand the basis for national policy decisions.
  • Assist in coordinating initiatives and policy documents among the various agencies within HHS. (e.g. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, etc.)
  • Aid in preparing briefings for the ODPHP Director and the Assistant Secretary for Health.
  • Have the opportunity to serve on interdepartmental committees involving a range of specific topics related to health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Understand the role of health communication in disease prevention and health promotion.
  • Develop fundamental competencies in public health.
    • ODPHP Visiting Scholar Program
The ODPHP Visiting Scholar program is an outstanding opportunity for college and medical students, preventive medicine and primary care residents, HHS Emerging Leaders, and other scholars to gain experience in the formation of public health and healthcare policy at the Federal level.
    • APTR-ODPHP Health Policy Residency Rotation Program
The APTR-ODPHP Health Policy Residency Rotation Program provides excellent learning opportunities in Federal health policy for preventive medicine residents (general preventive medicine/ public health, occupational medicine, or aerospace medicine) and primary care residents (with demonstrated interest in prevention, public health, or health policy). Residents will witness the process of federal health policy making and will be able to consider relevant roles for physicians. Residents may become involved in any aspect of ODPHP activities. Residents will be encouraged to attend meetings and briefings with high-level policy makers and other prevention-related events which often occur in Washington.
