PFP 50-State Workshop
Since 1998, the FDA has hosted a series of 50‐State workshops open to officials from all 50 states, including five U.S. territories and the District of Columbia. The workshops are designed to provide a setting for the state, local, tribal and territorial stakeholders to apply their expertise across multiple public health disciplines with a role in food safety to address the challenges of a growing global food supply. Starting in 2008, these workshops have been hosted biennally, under the auspices of the Partnership for Food Protection (PFP).
The PFP, which was originally established to work on projects recommended at the 2008 50-State Workshop, is a group of dedicated officials from federal, state, and local governments that have been brought together to build the foundation of an integrated food safety system (IFSS). The Food Safety Modernization Act passed on January 4, 2011, calls for enhanced partnerships and provides a legal mandate for developing an IFSS. The PFP workgroups are working on projects that support the development of an IFSS and are actively contributing to FSMA initiatives that support enhanced partnerships.
The FDA is committed to optimizing coordination of food safety efforts with state, local, tribal, and territorial regulatory and public health agencies and implementation of an IFSS. These workshops are a major step in a long-term process of collaboration to achieve uniformity and consistency in food and feed safety across the nation while acknowledging our individual responsibilities and authorities.
