Book and Other Printed Material Selections from the National Library of the NetherlandsThe Dutch settlement in North America resulted in the publication of many works in Amsterdam and other Dutch cities. This selection includes early descriptions of New Netherland; charters and other documents published by, or on behalf, of the West India Company; pamphlets produced to promote settlement or suggest improvements to the management of the colony; and English-language materials about the history of the Dutch in America published in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Manuscript Selections from the National Library of the NetherlandsJournael van Nieu Nederlandt 1647. Beschreven inde jaeren 1641. 1642. 1643. 1644. 1645. en 1646 is a unique thirty-nine-page document by an unknown author describing events in the colony of New Netherland in the years 1641-46. Because of its importance to the study of the early history of New York, the manuscript was translated into English and published under the auspices of the State of New York in Albany in 1856. Map Selections from the National Library of The NetherlandsThe cartographic collections of the National Library contain more than 25,000 maps and atlases. One item digitized for this project--a map of the region that is now New England--was published by Nicholas Visscher II (1649-1702) and is based on an earlier (1651) map by Johannes Janssonius.
