Genealogical Periodicals: A Guide for Research :
Periodical Indexes
The Key to Indexes which follows describes
the major indexes to genealogical periodicals that are available in
LH&G. It notes the time periods each index covers, its particular
subject or geographic specializations, and how the entries are arranged.
By far the most comprehensive periodical
index is Periodical Source Index, commonly known as PERSI, compiled
at the Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The aim
of PERSI is to provide place, subject, and surname access to every
significant English-language and French-Canadian historical and
genealogical periodical relating to family history research. Citations
refer researchers to approximately 3500 genealogical and local history
periodicals in the Allen County Public Library.
Although many researchers may find
that they only need to make use of PERSI, several other indexes
to American genealogical periodicals are shelved in LH&G. These
indexes may be useful for the localities and time periods which
they cover, or for the special features that they contain. They
are: GPAI; Jacobus; Kentucky; Munsell; Sperry; and Swem.
Researchers interested in articles
published in French- and German-language periodicals should make
use of Arnaud and Der Schlussel.
