- Description: A collection of over two hundred social dance
manuals at the Library of Congress published from ca. 1490 to 1929.
Along with dance instruction manuals, this collection also
includes a significant number of antidance manuals, histories, treatises
on etiquette, and items from other conceptual categories. Many of the
manuals also provide historical information on theatrical dance.

The materials in the collection, roughly 50 works, were published between 1831 and 1929.

Assembled by Hans Peter Kraus and his wife Hanni, these materials reveal a great breadth and scope in the primary and secondary materials that concern Sir Francis Drake. Books range in date from 1581 to 1695 and are in Spanish, English, Latin, German, French, and Dutch. Topics include general histories of exploration, trade, and navigation on the high seas including Drake's circumnavigation of the world. Other topics are of a more political nature and either extol Drake's accomplishments or decry his plunders in Spanish America. Still other accounts are biographies of the crowned heads Queen Elizabeth I and King Philip II [1527-1598].

Books from the Library of Congress collections digitized for Parallel Histories: Spain, the United States, and the American Frontier, a collaborative, bilingual digital library assembled by the Library of Congress, the National Library of Spain, and the Biblioteca Colombina y Capitular of Seville. To date, the focus of this collaborative project has been on exploration and early settlement. Rare books from the 15th through 18th century include two copies of Columbus’ account of his discoveries; a “Proof of noble blood” of Sebastián Vizcaíno, Cabeza de Vaca’s account of his journey through the Southwest, and Bernardo de Gálvez’s diary of the conquest of British Pensacola by the Spanish during the American Revolution. Other items include an English-language military survey published in 1848 and two volumes of Gaspar de Villagrá’s Historia de la Nueva México, written in ballad form and reprinted by the Museo Nacional de México in 1900.

Books from the Library of Congress collections digitized for France in America, a collaborative, bilingual digital library assembled by the Library of Congress and the Bibliothèque national de France. To date, the collaborative project illuminates two major themes in the history of relations between France and the United States: the role played by France in the exploration and settlement of the continent and its participation in several events which indelibly marked the history of the United States: the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the Louisiana Purchase. Includes books written by French explorers, missionaries, military officers and others who charted new routes or traveled across the Atlantic Ocean and across the North American continent, established early French settlements, negotiated alliances with Native tribes, and participated in the American War of Independence. Rare works include an account of France's attempted settlement at Rio de Janeiro (1557), Samuel de Champlain's account of his voyage to Canada (1613), and a peace treaty between the King of France and the Indians of Canada (1667).

The KB has enlisted the cooperation of other leading Dutch libraries, museums, and archives. Eventually, the Atlantic World will explore the history of the Dutch presence in America and the interactions between the United States and the Netherlands from Henry Hudson's 1609 voyage to the post-World-War-II period. The initial phase focuses on the period 1609-1664.

Russia and the United States were very different countries: Russia an autocracy ruled by the tsar, and America a democratic republic. The collection illuminates a number of themes, places and events, including: exploration; colonization; development; Alaska; Siberia, national identity; mutual perceptions; the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-5; the Klondike gold rush.
