Description: Lands' End in cooperation with Good Housekeeping magazine sponsored quilt contests in 1992, 1994, and 1996. Description: Twelve cylinders of Chippewa music among those collected by Laura and Ralph B. Miller (her first husband) of St. Louis, Missouri, probably in the course of their 1915 canoe trip between Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, and Duluth, Minnesota, with stops at the Wisconsin Chippewa reservations. Additional information and perhaps recordings were obtained during the summer of 1916 at Lac du Flambeau. The cylinders were transferred to the Library of Congress from the Detroit Public Library in 1954.

Title: Literatura de Cordel Brazilian Chapbook Collection, 1930-2008
Description: With over 9000 chapbooks in its Brazilian Chapbook Collection, the American Folklife Center houses one of the largest collections of literatura de cordel in the world. Descended from the medieval troubadour and chapbook tradition of Europe, literatura de cordel has entertained and informed the general public of Brazil for over a century, and offers insight into the popular culture of the country. In the markets of northeast Brazil, where literatura de cordel is most popular, local poets hang their little four by six-and-a-half inch chapbooks from strings, hence the name "literatura de cordel," which literally means “string literature.” The poets, known as cordelistas, then entertain the market crowd by reciting their narrative poems about current events, morality, or the adventures of a famous folk hero. Equally entertaining are the attractive woodcut prints, often done by the cordelista himself, that appear on the covers of the chapbooks to vividly illustrate the theme of the verses inside. The collection also contains 13 7-inch tapes of romances and other songs recorded by Sol Biderman in northeastern, Brazil, ca. 1968-1970, SR01-SR13 [AFS 14178-14190, LWO 6077].

A number of the tapes were recorded from radio and TV programs. Bluegrass performers represented include Bill Monroe, Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, Don Reno, and Red Smiley. Tapes also include interviews with country music artists of the 1920s and 1930s including Tom Ashley, Sam and Kirk McGee, Ernest V. Stoneman, Gid Tanner, and Frank Walker. Title: Montana Heritage Project
Description: The materials in this collection document the administration of the Montana Heritage Project and include many samples of student projects along with documentation of annual visits to the Library of Congress by selected students and teachers participating in the project. This multi-year project was begun in 1995 and funded by a grant from the Liz Claiborne and Arthur Ortenberg Foundation via the Library of Congress’s Madison Council, and operated under the American Folklife Center’s “K-12 Folklife in Education Initiative.” The project developed a one-week accredited teacher-training institute during which time teachers were instructed on methods for developing student- and teacher-designed classroom projects involving documentation and research in their respective communities. It also supported the implementation of the projects during the school year, providing necessary financial and academic support.

Description: Fifteen 6-inch dictaphone and 7 4-inch wax cylinders of Chitimacha songs and spoken word recorded by Morris Swadesh in Charenton, Louisiana, in 1931 and 1934, and one dictaphone cylinder containing Nootka sentences and a story with an embedded song recorded by Swadesh, probably near Alberni on Vancouver Island, in 1933. The Chitimacha materials were sung and spoken by Benjamin Paul and Delphine Ducloux; the Nootka speaker was Alex Thomas. The cylinders were received by exchange from the American Philosophical Society in 1970.

Description: Seven 12-inch discs of American Indian Peyote and other songs recorded by Omer C. Stewart from Northern Paiute, Washo, and Ute singers in Colorado, Nevada and California, 1938, etc.: their repertory also included Comanche, Kickapoo, Kiowa, Miwok, Navajo and Shoshone songs. Description: The collection consists of Peggy V. Beck’s research materials used to create the exhibition “Oremos, Oremos: New Mexican Midwinter Masquerades,” at the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, New Mexico, in 1987. Included are sound recordings of interviews and performances, field notes, photographs, drawings, and videocassettes. Beck conducted interviews in 1986 and 1987 in Costilla, Amalia, Cerro, Arroyo Seco, Taos Pueblo, Taos, Los Cordovas and other locations in New Mexico on Los matachines, an Indo-Hispano dance drama that is an allegorical representation of the meeting of indigenous and European cultures, with characters or groups of dancers representing El Monarca (Montezuma), his bride (Malinche), El Abuelo (Grandfather or ancestral spirit), and El Toro (Bull). Los matachines are the dance, the dancers, musicians, and elders who participate in the tradition. Abuelos and abuelas were a focus of Beck’s research and the collection includes a series of drawings of abuelos. Also documented are the Christmas nativity play, Los Pastores, New Year’s plays, and the custom known as Los Dias or Los Manueles, where singers make rounds in the villages to celebrate the New Year.

Title: Peter, Prince of Greece Recording Projects
Description: Two sets of field recordings made by anthropologist Peter, Prince of Greece, in Kerala and in West Bengal, India with wire spools provided by the Library of Congress. Three wire recordings are identified as "Assyro-Chaldean or Nestorian church service at Trichur" recorded on Sunday, December 11, 1949 in Trichur, Kerala, India, which documents a single religious service or mass, with some commentary by Prince Peter during and at the conclusion of the recording. The second set of four wire recordings was made in November 1950 under the auspices of the 3rd Danish Expedition to Central Asia in Kalimpong, India, of the local Tibetan population performing popular songs, traditional tales, lamaist ceremonies, in conversation "at a lunch party at which high class Tibetans took part." The collection includes correspondence between Peter, Prince of Greece and staff of the Library of Congress, 1948-1952 (9 items, 9 leaves from Prince Peter), and additional correspondence about the recordings

Title: "Pick" Temple Wire Recording Collection
Description: L. Parker ("Pick") Temple II was a popular folksinger in the Washington D.C. area during the late 1940s and 1950s. The collection samples Temple's radio performances from January 1948 through March 1949, as well as his appearance on a panel discussion on folksong with Duncan Emrich in April 1950. Emrich was a noted folklorist and was then director of the Archive of Folk Song, Library of Congress.

Documented at various locations in New Jersey by Bonnie Blair, Tom Carroll, Christine Cartwright, Carl Fleischhauer, Mary Hufford, Eugene Hunn, Jens Lund, Rita Moonsammy, Malachi O'Connor, Gerald E. Parsons, Nora Rubenstein, Sue Samuelson, and Elaine Thatcher, August 15, 1983-March 31, 1984. Cosponsored by the American Folklife Center, National Park Service, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, New Jersey Department of Human Resources, New Jersey Historical Commission, New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and Pinelands Commission. Title: Quinten Lotus Dickey Copyright Song Collection
Description: One audiocassette transfered from the Copyright office, and contains 3 songs sung by Lotus Dickey, and one hundred pages of manuscripts include the leadsheets for 2 more songs. The transfer resulted from a copyright search by Grey Larsen, who was then preparing a book on Dickey's songs. This was later published as The Lotus Dickey Songbook, with 4 audiotapes, by Lotus Dickey Music, in association with Indiana University Press.
