Cartographers Perform Airport Obstruction Survey at Miami International Airport

In early January, two cartographers from the National Geodetic Survey's (NGS) Field Operations Branch in Norfolk, VA, conducted an airport obstruction survey at the Miami International Airport for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The survey—the first following a 12-month lapse in field survey operations—is being performed by NGS in an effort to maintain the ability to conduct aeronautical surveys. It also allows NGS to transition from primarily collecting survey data to providing Quality Assurance (QA) services of contracted survey data submitted directly to the FAA Geographic Information System program. QA services will continue to be the primary objective within the branch, with field surveys becoming a subsidiary service. For more information, contact Dennis Hoar.
