Overview
The Loan Repayment Committee (LRC), is composed of senior intramural scientists,
including basic (bench) and clinical researchers, and science policy administrators.
The LRC is chaired by the NIH Deputy Director for Intramural Research, and the
Director, DLR, serves as the Executive Secretary. The Director, DLR, verifies the
eligibility of applicants and loans submitted for repayment and notifies individuals
when awards are made by the LRC. Since LRP participation is contingent upon NIH
employment, applicants must be recommended by an employing institute or center (IC)
of the NIH to be considered by the LRC.
Both the individual and the IC complete the necessary application forms (see the
Summary of Application Forms, below)
and submit them electronically to the DLR which verifies eligibility of applicants and their
loans
and submits those eligible to the LRC. The LRC reviews, ranks, and approves/disapproves eligible applicants for LRP awards.
Note: ACGME applicants should not start the online application until provided the special URL from DLR.
Application Deadlines
The online applications are available annually beginning on September 1 and must be submitted by the appropriate deadline. The deadline for Renewal applicants is February 1 and the deadline for New applicants is April 1
(see Summary for details).
Loan Repayment Committee Reviews
LRC reviews are based primarily on the applicant’s credentials and demonstrated
potential to perform basic or clinical research. In some cases, the research training
plan is the primary review focus.
LRP Awards
Award funding is highly competitive, and priority is based on LRC scores. Initial
applications are competed against each other, while renewal applications are competed
against each other. After the LRC meets, the Director, DLR, notifies individuals of the
amounts of their LRP awards. A LRP contract is executed when the approved individual
accepts an offer of NIH employment or continued employment for the period of the LRP
contract. If the LRC-approved research assignment changes, or if the employing IC
changes, the participant must have their continued eligibility re-certified. However,
participation in the LRP does not begin until the individual enters-on-duty as an NIH
employee in the LRC-approved research position.
