The Social Innovation Fund (SIF) makes grant awards of between $1 million and $10 million per year for up to five years to grantmaking intermediaries, selected through a rigorous, open competition. Intermediaries match their federal grants dollar-for-dollar and host open, evidence-based competitions to select nonprofits implementing innovative program models. Selected nonprofits receive awards of at least $100,000 per year for up to five years and must also secure dollar-for-dollar matching funds.
The SIF has held three competitions for grantees, awarding 11 grantmaking intermediaries in 2010, five in 2011, and four in 2012.
In 2010, as a part of the Corporation for National and Community Service's (CNCS) commitment to open government, CNCS released extensive information about SIF competition review processes, applicants, reviewers, and winning applications. In 2011, it became CNCS policy to release the following information within 90 business days of awarding selected grantees:
- Names of expert reviewers;
- List of all applicants;
- Executive summaries of all applications;
- Applications of grantees selected to receive awards; and
- External reviewer comments for the selected grantees.
