The Mary Frances Picciano Dietary Supplement Research Practicum

Application & Selection

Application Process

Apply Online Now

You must complete the application and submit all supporting documents by April 1, 2013. You will receive a confirmation email once your application has been received. Applicants will be notified by mid-April whether they will be registered to attend the practicum or be placed on a waiting list.

Selection Process

There are three tiers of candidates for admission. Those in Tier 1 will be admitted first. Remaining spaces will be open to candidates in Tier 2 followed by those in Tier 3. You must be able to attend the entire practicum. Please do not apply if you cannot commit to participating for the entire 4 days if accepted.

Tier 1

  • You are a full-time faculty member or doctoral student/postdoc/fellow in a recognized academic program.
  • FOR FACULTY: You are a full-time assistant, associate, or full professor.
  • FOR STUDENTS: You are (or will be as of September 2013) a doctoral student, postdoc, or fellow. Only these individuals are eligible to apply for a travel award (see section below).

Tier 2

  • You are a master’s degree student in a recognized academic program or you are attending medical, dental, or nursing school or a related non-doctoral-level professional program.
  • You are a practicing health professional with at least a master’s degree from a recognized academic program who works in either a healthcare, educational, or industrial setting or is self-employed.
  • You are a part-time or adjunct faculty member at a recognized academic institution.

Tier 3

  • You are an individual who has attended the practicum before.

Travel Awards

Travel awards will be available to students only (including postdocs and fellows who received their doctorates no more than 5 years ago) to help defray the costs of travel, accommodations, and meals. Make your best case for why you should receive a travel award.

Criteria for consideration for a travel award:

  • Your research experience demonstrates interest and/or relevance in the area of dietary supplements.
  • Those who anticipate the greatest travel costs (e.g., you live far from the Washington, DC, area or are served by an airport that does not offer relatively inexpensive flights to this area) will be given special consideration.

The Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) will select students to receive travel awards based on these criteria as well as achieving a good mix of awards to students from the largest number of academic institutions and health science disciplines.

Student applicants will be notified by mid-April whether they will receive a travel award as part of their admittance into the practicum.
