Q. When is the course offered?
The course is offered once per year starting in October. The lectures are typically held twice weekly on Monday and Tuesday evenings from 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Dates for each session are available in late summer of each year.
Q. How do you register for the course?
Beginning in early-August, on-line registration is available for those who are in the Washington, DC Metro commuting area and will be attending at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Q. Who is eligible to enroll in the course?
Anyone who has in interest in the subject matter can enroll in the course, however, they will either need to be in the Washington, DC Metro area or participating at one of our approved videoconference locations. Registrations are not accepted on an individual basis for those persons outside of the Washington, DC Metro commuting area. Persons outside of the Washington, DC Metro commuting area may view the archived course materials at the non-password-protected handout/video archive site, or check the approved remote location listing to determine if there is a site near you. Please note: there is no certificate offered for viewing the archived material.
Q. Is there an attendance requirement?
There is no attendance requirement.
Q. Is there a cost for the course?
No, there is no cost to enroll in the course. The only cost to students occurs if they decide to purchase the optional companion textbook.
Q. Where can I purchase the optional companion textbook?
The textbook, Principles and Practice of Clinical Research, Third Edition, can be purchased by the NIH participants in the Foundation for Advance Education in the Sciences (FAES) bookstore, located in the NIH Clinical Center, Room B1L101. The book can also be purchased at most major on-line retail book sellers.
Q. What happens if a student misses a lecture?
Students who miss a class may go back to the course website and view the entire lecture. The lecture is usually posted to the course website within 48 hours after the lecture has taken place. The video/handout archive site for enrolled students is password-protected and can be accessed only by those students enrolled in the current offering of the course.
Q. Is there an exam for this course?
Yes, there is an optional, on-line, final exam given at the end of the course.
Q. Is there a certificate awarded for this course?
Yes, a certificate of successful completion is awarded to those who pass the final exam with a score of 75% or higher.
Q. Will the certificate certify that I can conduct clinical trials?
No, the certificate only documents that one has an overview of the knowledge presented in the course.
