Sources of Data to Measure the Outcomes of Policy Change

1) The Alcohol Epidemiologic Data Directory

The Alcohol Epidemiologic Data Directory provides a current listing of surveys and other relevant data, much of which is suitable for outcome research on alcohol policies. Most data sets described in this document are national in scope. In some cases, however, select specialized data sets may be included. Information on the availability of and access to the data sets is provided.

2) Alcohol-Related Disease Impact (ARDI)

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s ARDI is an online resource that provides national and state estimates of alcohol-related health impacts, including deaths and years of potential life lost (YPLL). These estimates are calculated for 54 acute and chronic causes using alcohol-attributable fractions, and are reported by age and sex. A custom data feature allows users to conduct sub-state analyses of alcohol-attributable deaths and YPLL.

3) Statewide Availability Data System II: 1933 - 2003

The Prevention Research Center of the Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation has created multiple databases under an NIAAA grant. These databases are collectively referred to as the "Statewide Availability Data System II: 1933 - 2003." This data system is an archive of State-level panel data on availability, sales, and self-reported use of alcoholic beverages, as well as on rates of morbidity and mortality associated with alcohol use.

The data system includes 60 data tables, 435 unique columns and nearly 500,000 data cells. It covers the 50 States and the District of Columbia over time periods ranging, as noted, from 1933 - 2003. For details about this Data System click here.

These data are available without charge by permission of the developers. Prior to releasing any data, however, PIRE does request that users sign a Data Request Form and return it by mail or fax. To download a Data Request Form, click here.
