Health Disparities Seminar Series: August 2012

Photo of Dr. Mona N. Fouad Dr. Mona N. Fouad is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Division of Preventive Medicine. She also serves as Founding Director of the UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center.  Dr. Fouad is recognized nationally as a leader in health disparities research and is a member of the NIH National Advisory Council on Minority Health and Health Disparities.She is PI on numerous federally funded projects with a common theme of improving health and preventing disease in minorities. Dr. Fouad is PI of the NIH P60Comprehensive Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Center (MHDRC),for one of the Cancer Care Outcomes Research and Surveillance Consortium (CanCORS) sites funded by NCI, and for the UAB Minority Screening Center of the NCI-funded Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, Ovarian Cancer (PLCO) Screening Trial and the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST).  She is also the PI for the CDC-funded center entitled, Racial and Ethnic Approaches across the US (REACH US) Mid-South Center of Excellence in the Elimination of Disparities (CEED), a model that serves as an infrastructure to implement, evaluate, and disseminate locally, regionally and nationally evidence-based interventions to reduce breast and cervical cancer disparities between African American and white women.  She is the Co-PI on the REACH UP & OUT: Eliminating Breast and Cervical Cancer Disparities, the NIA/NIH-funded Deep South Resource Center for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR), and several other projects that focus on social determinants of health and enhancing minority enrollment in clinical trials.  Dr. Fouad also has played a prominent leadership role in the merging of efforts with UAB and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to train minority researchers and leaders in the national effort to eliminate health disparities, serving as a PI for the NCI- funded Morehouse School of Medicine/ Tuskegee University/UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center Partnership and is responsible for the training and career development of minority students and faculty within the partnership to enhance their research capabilities.  Through these efforts, as well as by generously devoting time to trainees that she personally and successfully mentors, Dr. Fouad is making an enormous contribution to the next generation of leaders in the fight against health disparities.
