Mission

The mission of the HIV Vaccine Unit is to promote the development and evaluation of safe and effective HIV vaccines appropriate for the United States and developing countries with the highest scientific and ethical standards.

Goals

• To conduct epidemiologic research including the development and characterization of cohorts appropriate for HIV vaccine trials.
• To conduct HIV vaccine-related social and behavioral research to support the development of innovative and proactive approaches to trial design, implementation, management, and analyses.
• To facilitate and support laboratory research relevant to HIV vaccines.
• To conduct HIV vaccine trials (phase I, II, III, and IV) with candidate HIV vaccines.
• To coordinate HIV vaccine activities within CDC and provide technical assistance and consultation to other national and international agencies and institutions.
• To develop and provide information on HIV vaccines to the public and to health care workers.
• To develop strategies and recommendations for HIV vaccine use.
