A construction project to improve access to Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s gravesite has been completed at Arlington National Cemetery.

ARLINGTON, Va. – A construction project to improve access to Senator Edward M. Kennedy gravesite is under way at Arlington National Cemetery. The project will connect Senator Kennedy’s gravesite to the gravesites of Robert F. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy with a granite path. Visitors currently have to exit the stepped path from the RFK gravesite to visit Senator Kennedy’s gravesite. The new path will be constructed in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act accessible design standards.

The National Memorial Day Observance at Arlington National Cemetery will be held on Monday, May 28, 2012 in the Memorial Amphitheater. This year’s observance includes a number of events to honor the fallen, including for the second year, the “Memorial Flowers” gift donation. All events are free and open to the public.

In recognition of National Medal of Honor Day, Arlington National Cemetery conducted a special guided walking tour of Arlington National Cemetery focusing on Medal of Honor recipients buried at Arlington, as well as the history of the Medal of Honor. Tom Sherlock, Arlington National Cemetery historian, and Timothy Frank, a historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command, narrated the tour. Frank was a contract historian for the Medal of Honor Society from 2002 to 2004, and had the opportunity to interview 60 Medal of Honor recipients. The Executive Director of the Army National Cemeteries Program announced in a hearing today that on March 12, Arlington National Cemetery will use an Army-designed geospatial mapping system to manage cemetery operations.

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Executive Director of the Army National Cemeteries Program testified today before the House Armed Services Joint Military Personnel and the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittees, along with the Department of the Army Inspector General, and the Government Accountability Office Director of Defense Capabilities and Management and Director of Acquisition and Sourcing Management regarding the progress that has been made at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as findings from requirements of Public Law 111-339.

Recent media reports erroneously stated that Arlington Cemetery is missing $12 million. This is not the case – Arlington has in fact fully accounted for these funds.
