What inspired you to want to work at the NIH?
I was inspired to work at the NIH because of its mission to “…enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce the burdens of illness and disability.” Even though I am in an administrative job, I can indirectly help the discovery process.
How did you become a student intern at the NIH?
I became a student intern at the NIH through a blast email from my school.
What are the roles and responsibilities of your internship position?
My roles and responsibilities as a Human Resources Specialist SCEP include assisting in recruitment and placement, researching programs, redesigning the Jobs@NIH webpage, creating a Google+ account for the NIH with the purpose to recruit, and shadowing.
How do you balance your school studies/commitments with your work schedule/tasks?
I balance school with work by either doing my school assignments before or after class or on the weekends. I have a list of when all of my assignments are due and make sure to follow it. This ensures that I will not forget any assignments. Overall, it has been very complicated to work full time as well as go to school full time and definitely worth it.

What inspired you to want to work at the NIH?
I wanted to work at the NIH because they had started a team to help veterans and that is what I want to do with my career. They are advancing health in so many different ways that I wanted to be a part of these advancements. These advancements help prolong life for humans not only in the United States but in other countries and that is what made me want to be a member of this outstanding team.
How did you become a student intern at the NIH?
I became a student intern at the NIH through LinkedIn. I saw the posting and decided to apply to the Human Resources SCEP position. I interviewed with the Corporate Recruitment Unit team who decided that I would be great to assist with the Veterans recruitment and that was the start of my process into the student internship program at the NIH.
What are the roles and responsibilities of your internship position?
I work in the Corporate Recruitment Unit within the Office of Human Resources department. I go to various career fairs and transition assistance program sessions to promote The National Institutes of Health to students as well as Veteran members who served in any branch of the military. My job is to get the information out about NIH to these great potential candidates on what the NIH has to offer and why it is a great place to work.
How do you balance your school studies/commitments with your work schedule/tasks?
I am an online student so balancing my studies is not as easy as someone would think. It takes a lot of dedication and time management to complete each course. I take time in reading my course material while on the train on the way to work, and I set a couple of hours after work to post to my schools discussion board. The weekends are used to write and edit papers that need to be turned in during that week. Knowing that I am in school they try not to overwhelm me and that is the best part about working here. They have a flexible schedule to accommodate your needs if you need to take time out for school as a student intern.
