The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) is made up of professionals in multiple fields. For this reason, the SAMHSA Internship Program is open to a diverse number of students whose interests and experience are in:

  • Public health
  • Behavioral and social sciences
  • Public policy
  • Business communications
  • Business administration
  • Information technology

Interns work 40 hours a week on meaningful projects, gaining real-life experience in areas aligned with their course of study. The SAMHSA Internship Program is where students have the opportunity to put their specific skills and knowledge to work and experience, first-hand, the value of their education.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for the SAMHSA Internship Program, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Have proof of U.S. citizenship or a permanent resident registration card (I-151 or I-551). Individuals on temporary visas are not eligible
  • Be enrolled in an accredited academic institution or a recent graduate (within one year) of a Bachelor or Graduate degree. Veterans, unable to apply within two years of receiving their degree due to military service obligation, have as much as six years after degree completion to apply.
  • Have a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale
