Commander Megan Promoted to Captain

The Director of the United States Coast Guard Band, Kenneth W. Megan was promoted to the rank of Captain in the United States Coast Guard, effective September 1, 2012. Coast Guard Academy Superintendent Rear Admiral Sandra Stosz presented the commission to CAPT Megan in a ceremony during the Band’s concert at Fort Trumbull on September 2, 2012. Congratulations, Captain!

Young Artist Competition Winners

Congratulations to Glastonbury High School student Kaitlin Pet, oboe, and New London High School student Samantha Lake, tuba, they are both winners of the 2012 Coast Guard Band Young Artist Competition!

Kaitlin PetKaitlin Pet, oboe, is a junior at Glastonbury High School. She began playing the oboe in fourth grade and has been especially active the past three years in local and regional music events, including the Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble, the Hartt Community Division Program, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute Oboe Program, and the Luzerne Music Center. Kaitlin is currently a member of the Juilliard Pre-College program, the Connecticut Youth Symphony, and the Glastonbury High School Symphonic Band. Her teachers have included Richard Dallassio and Marilyn Krentzman. Along with music, Kaitlin is also interested in botany/mycology and clay sculpture. After high school, she plans to pursue a double major program with intensive oboe studies.

Samantha LakeTuba soloist Samantha Lake is a senior at New London High School. An all-around achiever, she competes on the school’s math and track teams, in addition to serving as marching band drum major. She studies tuba with retired Coast Guard Band member Gary Buttery and is in her twelfth year of piano lessons. Beginning in her sophomore year Samantha was accepted to participate in Connecticut All-State Band, and this year she will perform in All-State Orchestra. Ms. Lake plans to continue her versatile career in college with a double major in tuba performance and mathematics, and joining the marching and pep bands.

 

These talented young musicians will be performing with us in Leamy Concert Hall on Sunday, June 3, 2012.

2012 School Concert Series

The Coast Guard Band presents the 28th annual School Concert Series for students in Leamy Hall Auditorium on the grounds of the historic U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. The concert is primarily geared for grades 4 - 8, and is designed to be both educational and entertaining.  Over 100,000 students have attended our young people’s concerts over the past 27 years, and all indications are that this year’s concert will be as popular as ever. more info...

2012 Coast Guard Band Young Artist Solo Competition

The United States Coast Guard Band is pleased to announce its sixth annual Young Artists Solo Competition.  Auditions will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012 (snow date:  March 31, 2012) at Leamy Concert Hall on the grounds of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.  The selected winner will be announced during the week after the audition date.  A performance by this student in conjunction with the Coast Guard Band’s public concert series is scheduled for Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Leamy Concert Hall. Eligible students must be attending high school in the following Connecticut counties:  New London, Middlesex, New Haven, Hartford, Tolland and Windham.  Candidates should limit their repertoire to one of the selections on the repertoire list below.  In addition, we strongly encourage the use of a piano accompanist for the audition.
