Measuring Operational Results from NextGen

Integrating NextGen capabilities to transform the National Airspace System is a complex effort that requires the FAA to continuously measure and report our progress. This website highlights qualitative and quantitative NextGen performance measures, focusing on locations where NextGen capabilities enhance airspace performance and emphasizing the link between investments and benefits.

  • Two runways: one on the left and one on the right. One runway opening when another runway is using NextGen landing procedures.

Deconflicting Flight Paths with NextGen Procedures

While the weather does its best to slow down flights, NextGen procedures keep aircraft safely separated and able to land. Precision flight paths are proving especially useful where airports are so close to each other that they use the same airspace.

WAM – It’s Making an Impact in Colorado

Colorado's gorgeous ski slopes attract a multi-billion dollar tourism industry. The rugged terrain that makes Colorado such a desirable place for winter sports also creates potential difficulties for traditional air traffic control technologies. Find out how NextGen is helping one airport bring in five times more flights per hour during peak ski season.

    NextGen Descends on Sky Harbor

Four new approaches into Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport are easing environmental impacts and creating a more enjoyable experience for passengers.

Honoring the Past While Flying Into the Future

New waypoints named in memory of 9/11 and to celebrate our nation's armed forces are also helping airlines burn less fuel on landings at Washington-area airports.

While honoring the past, these procedures are leading us into the future.

City Pairs

When a traveler starts to plan a trip or when an airline operator starts to plan air service, they will look at pairs of cities or pairs of metroplexes. For airline operators, city-pair performance is the most direct way to connect two markets. The January 2013 NPS release introduces this additional view of performance.

Airports

Even as we bring NextGen initiatives online at new airports, many airports are already taking advantage of NextGen procedures. Here is the progress for 30 airports.

Across the National Airspace System

As NextGen moves toward full implementation, the benefits of new capabilities and procedures that enhance passengers’ experience and improve safety will grow. It is crucial to track the progress of those benefits to ensure that we provide improvements that make the kinds of impacts we need. Explore what NextGen is bringing to you and what you can expect from this monumental undertaking.

What's New?

January 2013 Specific Updates:

At the request of our stakeholders and FAA reauthorization requests from Congress, the NPS is now reporting the average gate-to-gate time for Key City Pairs. These city pairs were chosen by the NextGen Advisory Council for the FAA to use in measuring the impacts of NextGen. City-pair metrics look at performance of flights that either originate or conclude at an airport, such as New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA), or metroplex, such as Southern California. Directional information for each city pair is shown with the origin airport (New York LaGuardia Airport, LGA) and the destination airport (Los Angeles International, LAX).

  • The NPS now contains data from FY 2012 for all Access and Efficiency metrics

  • The NPS home page reflects the addition of City Pairs metrics

  • Where appropriate, Success Stories are now linked to Airport pages

This new, focused approach will provide transparency into and emphasize the link between NextGen investments and benefits. We will add Key Performance Indicators and targets as data become available.

Coming Soon...

Future verisons of the NPS will include additional city pairs and focus on metroplex areas.
