Applying for Technical Assistance

Agencies with an interest in requesting technical assistance may apply by sending a written request addressed to the Technical Assistance Manager of the NIC Division related to their agency type. All requests for training activities should be addressed to the NIC Academy Division Technical Assistance Manager. Upon receipt of an official request for technical assistance, NIC will send an acknowledgement letter confirming that it has received the request and will begin the technical assistance assessment process.

Application Requirements

The agency chief executive officer, as defined below, must sign a letter of request prepared on official stationery that:
  • Describes briefly the problem for which assistance is requested.
  • Identifies the agency contact person by name (if different from the agency head), address, telephone number, and e-mail address.
  • References any supporting documentation or background materials that have an impact on the problems needing to be resolved.
  • Identifies the NIC program staff who assisted the applicant if the request was preceded by a telephone call.
  • Specifies a desired timeframe for service delivery.
The chief executive officer is defined as follows:
  • In jails, it is the sheriff if the jail is under the sheriff. If not, it is the chief executive officer of the local department of corrections.
  • In prisons, it is the director or commissioner of the state department of corrections.
  • In community corrections, it is the chief probation officer, chairperson of the parole board, executive director of the agency, or director of the department of corrections, depending on the organizational structure of the agency.

For training-related requests, priority consideration will be given to those that have regional impact or build agency capacity to deliver training.

Receipt of Application

Upon receipt of request for technical assistance, NIC will send you an acknowledgment letter stating that it has received the request and will begin the TA needs assessment process
