Science Inventory
Basic Information
The EPA Science Inventory is a searchable catalog of on-going and completed science activities and scientific and technical products conducted by EPA and by universities and other research institutions through EPA-funded assistance agreements.
A science activity describes any discrete task, function, or business line supporting EPA's mission, where the natural or social sciences are the primary disciplines required to conduct the work. Examples include research programs and projects, scientific and technical studies, and economic and social science studies. Most science activities will result in one or more scientific or technical products.
A scientific or technical product is a published document used to support an EPA regulatory program, policy position, research agenda, or other Agency position or action. Examples include journal articles, books, reports, databases, models, methodologies, newsletters, brochures, and presentations.
The purpose of the Science Inventory Web site is to provide information about scientific direction and achievement at EPA. Researchers and scientists from state and local governments, universities, non-profit organizations, and the private sector can use the site to pursue collaborative research efforts, develop research programs, and obtain technical information and assistance. Students and the general public can gain a better understanding of the role of science in supporting EPA's mission to protect human health and the environment.
The Science Inventory contains records of thousands of EPA science activities and products. These records provide:
- Description and purpose of the activity or product
- Activity or product start and end dates
- The EPA office responsible for the activity or product
- Links to final reports and to related work and Web sites
- Peer review actions
- Contact information
The Science Inventory also contains the Peer Review Agenda, a compilation of planned and ongoing EPA science activities and products that meet the Office of Management and Budget's peer review requirements for "influential scientific information" or "highly influential scientific assessments."
