Fort Stewart is located on the coastal plain of southeast Georgia, approximately 35 miles southwest from Savannah, Georgia. Fort Stewart is bordered by Hinesville on the south, Richmond Hill on the east, and Pembroke on the north. Hunter Army Airfield is located within the city limits of Savannah. The best way to get to either base is by Interstate highway.

 

You will need a valid drivers license, vehicle registration and proof of insurance to gain access to the Installation.

Fort Stewart from I-95:

From Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport take I-95 South to Exit 87 (Coastal Highway/GA Hwy 17). Turn left on GA Hwy 17 South. Travel to GA Hwy 196 West. Veer to the right on GA Hwy 196 West and travel to US Hwy 84 West; turn right at the T-junction. Travel to General Stewart Way and turn right onto General Stewart Way. Follow directions to the Fort Stewart main gate (Gate 1). You will see Gate 1 where you will gain access to enter the Installation.

 

Fort Stewart from 1-16:

(from Macon), travel east to I-95 South. Take right onto I-95 South and follow instructions for I-95 to Fort Stewart.

 

Hunter Army Airfield from I-95 and I-16:

From Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport take I-95 South to I-16 East to Savannah. Travel I-16 to Savannah and proceed to I-516 (also Lynes Parkway/DeRenne Ave) and merge right onto I-516. Travel to 1st traffic light (Montgomery Street and make right turn). Proceed to Gate 2 to enter Installation. At Gate 2 you will gain access to the Installation.

 

The Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Division maintains a number of offices, recycling stations, and other facilities at Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield. Directions to these locations are listed below:

Prevention & Compliance Branch on Fort Stewart:
Once you go thru Gate 1, turn left at the first light onto Bultman Avenue. Then travel to Frank Cochran Drive. You will see a parking lot to the left. The Directorate of Public Works Environmental and Natural Resources Division, Prevention and Compliance Branch, building 1137 is located at far left side of parking lot.
Fish and Wildlife Branch on Fort Stewart:
Follow the directions to the Prevention & Compliance Branch. Turn left on Frank Cochran Drive from Bultman Avenue, travel approximately one half mile and you will see building 1145 on the right.
Forestry Branch on Fort Stewart:
Take I-95 South to Highway 144 West to Fort Stewart. Turn right onto Highway 144 and travel Highway 144 West for approximately 20 miles. Building 8064 is on the right.
Hazardous Waste Turn-In Facility on Fort Stewart:
Follow the directions to the Fish and Wildlife Branch. Just past this building on the right is Fort Stewart Tank Trail 90 (FS 90) paved turn-off to the right. Turn right onto FS 90 you will pass two warehouse buildings on the left, then a small family cemetery plot and a turn-off to the left. By this time FS 90 has become a dirt road. Proceed approximately .10 mile further until you encounter two unpaved roads leading into a single intersection with FS 90 from the right. Turn right onto the left-hand of these two roads, at the end of which you will see a fenced-in compound. This is the FS HW turn-in facility.
Recycling Center on Fort Stewart:
Follow the directions to the Prevention & Compliance Branch. Turn right on Frank Cochran Drive, then an immediate left onto Italy St. Stay to the right, cross the railroad tracks at the end of the street. Drive straight through fenced gate to the third building (1143).
Material Recovery Center on Fort Stewart:
Follow the directions to the Prevention & Compliance Branch, building 1384, turn right on Frank Cochran Drive, go across the railroad tracks to McFarland Ave, turn left, follow McFarland to William H. Wilson Ave. turn left follow William H. Wilson to Kilpatrick Road turn left Follow Kilpatrick across scales (stop on scales let scale house know your destination) continue to building 1384 on the left inside fenced area.
Environmental Division office on Hunter Army Airfield:
From Gate 2 continue to travel Montgomery/Duncan Street until Stephen Douglas Street, here you will make left turn. You will then travel to Hickam Blvd and turn right. Follow Hickam Blvd until you see building 615, Directorate of Public Works, Environmental Office on the left.
Recycling Facility on Hunter Army Airfield:
From Gate 2 continue to travel Montgomery/Duncan Street until Stephen Douglas Street, here you will make right turn. You will then travel to North Perimeter Road and turn left. Follow North Perimeter Road approximately half mile until you see a sign Hunter Army Airfield Recycling/Hazwaste facility turn left follow the road around and on the right you will see a fenced in area (Hunter Army Airfield Recycling/Hazwaste area).
