As part of the Commission charter, we were asked to examine all options for managing the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle, including alternatives for storage, processing and disposal of high level waste.
In our efforts to do so we travelled to various countries that have set a standard for accomplishing one or more of these goals. For each trip, we assembled a group of Commission and staff members who were able to tour facilities of interest, and interact with local governments, industry, stakeholders and the public. When feasible, the BRC conducted public meetings or otherwise participated in meetings intended to gather information relevant to our charge.
