Command Sergeant Major Michael L. Hatfield is a native of Odessa, Texas. He entered the Army on 10 March 1987 and completed One Station Unit Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma as a cannon crewmember (13B). He received his secondary as a multiple launch rocket system crewmember (13M) at Fort Sill in 1996.

He has served in a variety of duty positions to include Assistant Gunner, Armorer and Gunner for A Battery, 2nd Battalion, 7th Field Artillery Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, New York; Section Chief and Gunnery Sergeant for C Battery, 3rd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Calvary Division, Fort Hood, Texas; Section Chief for A Battery, 21st Field Artillery Regiment, 1st Calvary Division, Fort Hood; Section Chief for C Battery, 6th Battalion, 37th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Stanley, South Korea; Platoon Sergeant and Master Gunner, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 20th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood; Weapons Specialist, Treaty Escort Manager, First Sergeant, Operations Sergeant Major for the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Fort Belvoir, Virginia; First Sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Infantry Division Artillery, Camp Stanley; First Sergeant for Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Infantry Division, Camp Red Cloud, South Korea; Operations (G-3) Sergeant Major, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood; Fires and Effects Sergeant Major, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Hood; Sergeant Major for 6th Iraqi Army Military Transition Team; and Command Sergeant Major of 2nd Battalion, 20th Field Artillery Regiment, Fort Hood.

Command Sergeant Major Hatfield served in Operations Desert Shield/Storm with the 1st Cavalry Division and has served four tours during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom with the Coalition Forces Land Component Command/75th Exploitation Task Force, the Iraqi Survey Group, 4th Infantry Division and the 41st Fires Brigade.

His military education and training includes the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy, First Sergeant Course, Senior Leader Course, Advanced Leader Course, Warrior Leader Course, Whitehouse Evasive Driving Course, Central Intelligence Agency BIO/CHEM Engineering Production Course, Portable Isotope Neutron System Course, Hazardous Materials, Ultrasonic Pulse Echo Course, Defense Threat Reduction Agency Demilitarization Operations, Central Intelligence Agency Marksmanship Training Course, United Nations Chemical Weapons Treaty, Radiation Safety Course, Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Operations Course and the Battle Staff NCO Course. He has earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland. 

Command Sergeant Major Hatfield’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal with six oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Humanitarian Service Medal.

He is a member of the prestigious Sergeant Audie Murphy Club, the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara, and is a recipient of the Major General Aubrey “Red” Newman Award.
